Filppula’s breakaway goal snapped a 2-2 tie and secured a needed victory for the Flyers, who entered on a 1-6-1 skid. Columbus, which also won, is tied with the Philadelphia but the Flyers hold the tiebreaker.

CINCINNATI (AP) When Bill Lazor looks at the Bengals’ playbook Cheap Kareem Martin Jersey , he sees the imprint of three coordinators. He’s getting a chance to try to pull it all together and resurrect the NFL’s least-productive offense – a shocking statistic for a talented unit.

Coach Marvin Lewis’ first big decision after getting another contract extension was offering Lazor the chance to stay as coordinator and give the offense a major overhaul. The Bengals finished last in the league in offense and had the worst running game in their history, averaging only 85 yards.

Andy Dalton and A.J. Green will be back, along with running backs Joe Mixon and Giovani Bernard. The playbook could be noticeably different – Lazor said some things need to be done ”totally differently.”

”There are times when each of us, in order to grow, need to be pushed and need to be made uncomfortable Authentic Kyle Lauletta Jersey ,” Lazor said. ”Andy wants to be great, so he’ll accept that challenge if we make him uncomfortable at times.”

Dalton has worked with four offensive coordinators during his seven seasons in Cincinnati.

Jay Gruden helped Dalton and Green get grounded as rookies in 2011, the start of five straight postseason appearances and first-round losses. Ken Zampese was elevated when Jackson went to the Browns after the 2015 season, and he took the West Coast offense in some different directions. Lazor took over but was confined to working from Zampese’s playbook for the rest of the season and tweaking things gradually.

Now Lazor gets to analyze the offense, overhaul it, and put his imprint on it.

His biggest challenge will be restoring a comfort level on the offense. The Bengals would play well for a few series or a half, then totally collapse and go long stretches without as much as a first down.

”We just have to be consistent,” Dalton said. ”Everybody’s got to be on the same page. That’s what the offseason will be for, to look at everything.”

Much of the focus will be on the line, which lost left tackle Andrew Whitworth and right guard Kevin Zeitler in free agency a year ago. They were replaced with inexperienced tackles who struggled – the running backs found few holes and Dalton was running to avoid the rush much of the time. Line coach Paul Alexander was let go on Wednesday.

Getting the line fixed is the top priority. Until the running backs get more room and Dalton gets more time Authentic Mason Cole Jersey , the offense will remain stuck in place.

”We have an amazing group of threats at wide receiver, and we have to capitalize on that,” Lewis said. ”We have to get our quarterback to be the guy we expect him to be day-in and day-out, and lead the football team that way. That means we have to keep him from getting jostled around.”

“There are just simple topics in Phase I, Phase II (of the offseason program),” Payton told me Wednesday morning. “It’s in its early stages of discussion. But we’re starting with an issue that you’ll hear more about in the coming months and years, as we draw closer to the 2020 expiration of the collective bargaining agreement. And while it’s one you might not think about, the coaches you watch every Sunday in the fall believe it’s beginning to affect the product you’re seeing between the white lines.

During the 2011 labor negotiation, one big give-back from the owners to players related to work rules. Each team’s offseason program was cut by five weeks, from 14 to nine, with only five of those weeks to include on-field work. The number of hours within that time was reduced. Summer two-a-days were eliminated. Allowable contact was reduced drastically.

The truth is, it really wasn’t much of a sacrifice for the owners—You mean, we get to shut off the lights for another five weeks?—but it flipped upside down the way coaches could run their programs. And while coaches could get creative—ex-Niners coach Jim Harbaugh used to run separate sessions on adjacent fields during camp to maximize reps—that time can’t be made up, which they found was good for no one.

“Our players like when we coach them,” Texans coach Bill O’Brien said. “I had a kid come in the other day. Can I get my playbook? ‘No.’ Can you imagine that? I can’t give him his playbook. It doesn’t make any sense. I’m a firm believer that, and I’m stepping out of my lane a little bit, but I just think for this game to keep going the way it’s going, and it’s an awesome game Cheap Derwin James Jersey , we need more time with the players.”

OK, so where is this felt?

The easiest place to start is in player development. Some coaches have groused that developing depth, especially at positions where backups don’t rotate into games (quarterback, offensive line) has gotten infinitely more difficult. The talented defenseman opened it at the junior world championship in Buffalo before becoming a mainstay on the Finnish men’s national team at the next two top tournaments: the Pyeongchang Olympics and the ongoing world championship.

In that time the 18-year-old has established himself as a reliable defenseman who has passed the test against top NHL talents at the tournament in Denmark. He plays in the top unit, meaning he has to stop the offensive aces of the opposition and that’s exactly what he has done.

NHL leading scorer Connor McDavid could attest to that.

On Saturday, Finland upset star-studded Canada captained by McDavid 5-1 and Heiskanen contributed a great deal.

He played 18:25 but his best moment came in the middle period when Canada was trailing 3-1 and desperately pressing to score. At one point, McDavid had just an empty net in front of him. Goaltender Harri Sateri was still at the far post and McDavid’s shot from the left circle was heading for goal.

But then Heiskanen came seemingly out of no where to Finland’s rescue, tipping the puck to safety.

”It was almost in the net but I hit the puck Cheap Jeremiah Attaochu Jersey ,” Heiskanen said. ”It was a good save.”

When the two met in the third period, the result was a two plus two-minute penalty for high sticking for a frustrated McDavid, effectively ending Canada’s chances of a comeback.

Finland captain Mikael Granlund praised Heiskanen.

”I have seen him at the games here and nothing really surprises me about him,” Granlund said. ”The way he skates, the way he handles the puck and sees the ice. He can play these games. He’s been really Cheap Ryan Switzer Jersey , really good this tournament. He’s got a great career ahead of him.”

The obvious next step is the NHL.

He said the transition has not been a problem.

”It was tough sometimes but mostly quite easy because I play with smarter players. Of course, the play is faster than at the junior category and I face stronger guys,” he said.

The Denmark tournament proved he is ready to stop the best.

”It’s nice to face those guys and see where I am,” Heiskanen said. ”It’s a good test to play them, maybe I will play them next year in the NHL. I want to play there as soon as possible Authentic Jake Guentzel Jersey , that’s my goal.”

There’s no doubt that he has the skills to make him a highly effective defenseman. But he knows he still has homework to do.

”I have to practice hard this summer and get little bit stronger,” he said.

In the meantime, he has to do what hockey rookies have to do: after practice with the Finnish national team, he can be found staying late on the ice and picking up pucks.

Zuerlein, who leads the NFL in scoring this season with 158 points, has been dealing with a lingering back injury all season and will undergo surgery Thursday morning to repair a herniated disc, head coach Sean McVay said.

McVay said not having the reliable Zuerlein, who has made 126 of 139 career field goal attempts (90.6 percent) inside of 50 yards, might have an impact on how he calls plays on offense.

Zuerlein aggravated the injury before the 42-7 win at Seattle on Sunday, but was able to make two field goals and four of five extra points against the Seahawks despite being barely able to stand.

The discomfort got to a point where Zuerlein could no longer kick in the fourth quarter, forcing the Rams to keep their offense on the field on fourth down.

The 27-year-old Poe played five seasons for the Kansas City Chiefs and went to two Pro Bowls after being selected with the 11th overall pick in the NFL draft in 2012. Poe spent last season with the Falcons and played in 16 games and had 39 tackles, 2 sacks and two passes defensed.

The moves – or at least the financial investment – comes as a bit of a surprise.

However, despite Kizer’s latest stumble, Jackson still feels he will develop into a dependable starter, and perhaps become Cleveland’s long-sought answer at the problematic position. Jackson predicted Kizer would struggle in his first season, but he’s seen that before.

”DeShone is still a growing young quarterback Authentic Ryan Kesler Jersey ,” he said. ”He is working extremely hard. He is trying his tail off to win for his football team, and I think sometimes in those moments, you kind of revert back.

”You are going to take the good with the bad. He has done some good things. He did some things that he has to continue to grow and learn from. I am not down on DeShone. I want DeShone to keep working at this thing.

”He knows he has my backing and my support, but he knows there are some areas he has to grow and grow up pretty fast. I think he has taken that challenge.”

Jackson said some of Kizer’s issues on Sunday could be attributed to his helmet headset not working properly.

Kizer was unable to decipher some play calls from Jackson and didn’t hear others, and the Browns were forced to use walkie-talkies on their sideline at StubHub Center.

”We will take it up with the league,” Jackson said. ”We heard there was another team that had the same issue one time at that particular stadium.”

That was news to Chargers coach Anthony Lynn, who was unaware of the Browns’ technology trouble.

”It’s the first I’ve heard of it,” Lynne said. ”We didn’t have any problems on our sidelines.”

Guard Joel Bitonio was initially puzzled why the Browns calls were coming in late Cheap Daniel Kilgore Jersey , and said Kizer had to improvise and call some plays on his own.

”Hopefully we don’t have any more of those issues,” he said. ”We’re going to have to turn into a high school team where we just have a guy run it in from the sideline all the time.”

Kizer can add the communication breakdown to a list of firsts in his NFL initiation. He’s been forced to learn the hard way, taking lumps and losses along the way.

”This experience for him is invaluable,” Jackson said. ”He is getting real-time game reps in the National Football League against some really good defenses that have shown him where he has to improve. We all know players make huge improvements from Year 1 to Year 2 because all of a sudden, you understand the speed of the game, what it takes to win, how you prepare.”

Bitonio can relate.

He said it was understandable for Kizer to show up to work feeling a little depressed.

”It’s tough,” Bitonio said. ”I think that’s what Mondays are for Dolphins Kalen Ballage Jersey , though, to kind of get it away and if he’s still feeling that way either tomorrow or the next day, then you kind of talk to him. But Mondays you’ve got to let him have some time to air it out and fix those mistakes. … The NFL has a great way of humbling you.”

He’s running out of chances.

Yanked by Jackson last week after throwing interceptions on back-to-back passes, Kizer has been granted another start on Sunday in London as the winless Browns face the Minnesota Vikings, who have one of the NFL’s best defenses.

Kizer has been plagued by turnovers all season – his 11 picks lead the league – and he’s grateful that Jackson is showing confidence that he can learn from his mistakes.

”It is another opportunity to go out there and get it right for once,” Kizer said Wednesday. ”For me, it is about taking these opportunities that coach has been able to give me in a league where not a lot of guys get these and maximizing it for once.”

As the Browns (0-7) stagger toward their bye week and deeper into another losing season that could lead to yet another coaching and front office overhaul Authentic Kyle Lauletta Jersey , Kizer’s development has been among the team’s most pressing issues.

Cleveland needs to figure out quickly if the 21-year-old can be their quarterback of the future.

At this point, he hasn’t convinced the Browns he should be their QB of the present.

”There is not a lot of guys out there who can hold themselves to standards as high as I hold myself to,” he said. ”It has been pretty disappointing to have a start the way that we have had. Against the New York Jets on Oct. 8, Kizer was pulled by Jackson at halftime after two costly turnovers in the red zone. He was replaced by Kevin Hogan, who then started the following week at Houston.

Kizer started last week against Tennessee and played well in the first half, completing 9 of 11 passes but threw an interception to stop a potential scoring drive in the final minute of the second quarter and threw another on his first pass in the third. Cody Kessler came in and finished the 12-9 overtime loss.

Jackson has seen improvement in Kizer, but wants more and believes his handling of the young QB has been appropriate.

Jackson’s critics – and their ranks have grown with his 1-22 record – argue that he’s shattering Kizer’s confidence with his yo-yo approach.

The coach doubled down on his methods.
