Along with Shula, the Panthers also cut ties with quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey two days after a playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints.

”I believe we need some different ideas going forward,” Rivera said at a news conference.

Shula spent seven seasons with Carolina, working as the quarterbacks coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2013.

Carolina was 11-5 this season and finished 19th in total offense, but again struggled moving the ball through the air and was 28th in passing. The Panthers were 12th in scoring.

Rivera said the Panthers already have ”a few” candidates in mind, and strongly hinted it will be someone with NFL experience Authentic Lonnie Chisenhall Jersey , not a college coach, from outside the organization.

Rivera said he still expects the Panthers will use the read option with quarterback Cam Newton, who was the team’s leading rusher last season with 754 yards. He also wants to see the ball in Christian McCaffrey’s hands in open space.

Carolina has been one of the league’s top running teams – in large part because of Newton’s ability to run the ball – over the past four seasons, averaging the league’s fourth-highest total at 128.3 yards per game.

However, its passing game has sputtered.

It didn’t help that the Panthers suffered several injuries at wide receiver and tight end this season and traded away No. 1 receiver Kelvin Benjamin.

Newton’s passing numbers have taken a nosedive since he was selected as the league’s MVP in 2015 when he combined for 45 touchdowns – 35 passing and 10 rushing – and led the Panthers to the Super Bowl.

He has posted the worst two quarterback passer ratings of his seven-year NFL career in the past two seasons.

Rivera said he informed Newton about the decision to fire Shula after it was made, but wouldn’t comment on the quarterback’s reaction to the news calling it ”personal.”

This past season, Newton posted a QB rating of 80.7, which ranked 18th in the league. He completed just 59.1 percent of his passes for 3,301 yards with 22 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

”This is all about growth as a football team, and we have room to grow,” Rivera said.

Dell made 31 saves and earned his eighth win in his past nine starts when Tomas Hertl scored a tiebreaking, power-play goal early in the third period that lifted San Jose to a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night.

”It seems like the same story every time he plays: He plays well,” teammate Logan Couture said. ”Pretty remarkable for a guy who doesn’t know when he’s going to play. He just kind of gets thrown into the back-to-backs. He’s been outstanding this year.”

Jones sat out with a minor injury but Dell was strong all night, stopping all seven shots from Pittsburgh’s dangerous power-play unit and keeping the Penguins off the scoreboard for the final 56:42.

The hype surrounding Garoppolo has only been increasing since he arrived last week from New England in a trade in hopes he can be a franchise quarterback in San Francisco. But for now, rookie C.J. Beathard remains the starter while Garoppolo gets up to speed on a new offense and the 49ers get healthy enough to give him a chance to succeed when he does get to play.

”I know everyone is very excited and wants to see him play, including myself, including our coaches and players, including my wife,” Shanahan said Wednesday. ”I get that. I’m very well aware of that Authentic Jeff Bagwell Jersey , but I think I’m fortunate to be in a situation where we truly can do what we think is right and that’s really what we’re trying to figure out and that’s not something you just assume. It’s something you watch day-to-day and you take everything into account.”

Garoppolo is learning quickly. He did well enough last week to be able to serve as the backup in case Beathard got hurt. Shanahan said he was confident in calling about 25 run plays and 20 passes if Garoppolo had been forced into action.

While Beathard got the bulk of the starter’s work in practice Wednesday, Garoppolo is learning more of the offense and could get more practice time as the week progresses.

But Beathard remains the starter for now.

”I don’t want to throw a guy into a situation that’s tough to succeed in,” Shanahan said. ”It’s very tough when some of the stuff we are going through injury-wise, but it’s not just that. It’s also throwing a guy in that situation with his lack of reps and lack of experience.”

The 49ers made a big investment in Garoppolo, trading a 2018 second-round pick to New England last week to acquire the quarterback they hope can lead a turnaround for a struggling franchise.

Garoppolo showed some promise last year when he made two starts for the Patriots in place of a suspended Tom Brady. He completed 42 of 59 passes for 496 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in wins against Arizona and Miami. He got hurt in the second quarter of his second start and has thrown just four passes since then.

Now he’s doing his best to get up to speed on San Francisco’s offense.

Beathard, a third-round pick this year, has had a rough time in his three starts since taking over for Brian Hoyer. No quarterback has been blitzed on more pass plays the past three weeks than Beathard, according to SportRadar, as defenses are testing the rookie quarterback playing behind the suspect line. He has completed just 16 of 39 passes for 173 yards against the blitz in those games, while getting sacked four times.

While Shanahan has cited the injuries on the offensive line as one reason why he’s not playing Garoppolo Adidas Jonathan Toews Jersey , Beathard said he doesn’t view himself as the crash-test dummy.

”I just don’t listen to it,” he said. ”People can say this or that. I’ve heard worse things said about me. The coaches have the team’s best interest in mind. I trust them and trust my team to get back to work this week and work to get a win.”

The surgery will be for a torn pectoral muscle, the person told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity Thursday because it has not yet been announced by the team.

Hightower left Sunday’s win over Atlanta in the second half with the shoulder issue and sat out the first practice of the week Wednesday. He’s missed two games this season with a knee injury.

Hightower has 14 tackles and two sacks. In March, he signed a new four-year deal worth $35.5 million.

With Hightower out, his snaps are expected to fall to Kyle Van Noy and veteran David Harris.

CINCINNATI (AP) Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict won’t be suspended for the contact with an official that got him ejected from a 24-20 loss at Tennessee.

A league spokesman said Monday that Burfict faces a fine only. He pushed an official’s arm out of the way on the sideline in the second quarter after quarterback Marcus Mariota ran out of bounds. Two plays earlier Authentic Joc Pederson Jersey , Burfict drew an unnecessary roughness penalty for hitting Mariota out of bounds.

It was the second game in a row that the Bengals (3-6) had a star player ejected before halftime. Receiver A.J. Green was kicked out of a loss at Jacksonville after grabbing cornerback Jalen Ramsey around the neck, tackling him and punching him.

Burfict’s latest problems add to his history of fines and suspensions.

The Coyotes, in their first game under new coach Rick Tocchet, led 4-1 at the Honda Center following Christian Fischer’s goal at 13:50 of the second period, only to give up four consecutive Ducks goals and lose 5-4, with Rickard Rakell scoring the game-winning goal at 16:30 of the third period.

Arizona (29-40-12) went on to lose its next 10 games, going 0-10-1 to start the season, and never recovered despite a respectable second-half surge in which it has gone 20-13-7 this calendar year. The Coyotes still haven’t reached the postseason since 2011-12.

Anaheim (43-25-13) took that first game and built its sixth consecutive playoff season Authentic Brock Holt Jersey , with its opponent and its playoff seeding to be determined by its final regular-season game Saturday night at Gila River Arena.

The Ducks moved into third place in the Pacific Division, one point ahead of the Los Angeles Kings, by beating the Dallas Stars 5-3 Friday night behind right wing Jakob Silfverberg’s goal and two assists.

They trail second-place San Jose by only one point, so if the Ducks beat Arizona and the Sharks lose Saturday to the Minnesota Wild, Anaheim will claim second place and home ice for the first round of the playoffs. However, should the Ducks lose and the Kings beat the Stars at the Staples Center, Anaheim would fall back to being a wild-card team.

Goaltender Antti Raanta proved to be a true No. 1 goalie once he was fully healthy — he is 21-16-6 with a shiny 2.24 goals-against average — and was rewarded this week with a $12.75 million, three-year contract extension.

Reliable backup goalie Darcy Kuemper also is locked up for multiple seasons, giving the Coyotes strength at a position that was remarkably weak when Raanta was hurt at the start of the season – contributing to the terrible start.

Clayton Keller, the 19-year-old center Authentic Nick Ahmed Jersey , started strong with 11 goals in his first 16 games and is finishing strong, too, with five goals and 12 assists in his last 14 games – giving him 23 goals and 65 points for the season.

Center Derek Stepan (56 points) had a solid season in his first year with Arizona, especially from a leadership standpoint. Oliver Ekman-Larsson recovered from a slow start to have a typical season for one of the Western Conference’s best two-way defensemen.

Defenseman Kevin Connauton has scored 10 of his 11 goals since Feb. 1.

Still, the Coyotes’ 4-3 loss Thursday at Vancouver was another defeat that summed up their season, despite their 6-3-1 record in their last 10 games. They led 3-1 in the third period, but didn’t get a shot off the entire period and went on to lose in overtime on Daniel Sedin’s second goal of the game, set up by brother Henrik in the soon-to-retire twins’ final game on home ice.

“I’m embarrassed for us we couldn’t get a shot on net Authentic Zack Greinke Jersey ,” Tocchet said. “A couple of guys showed up, but that was about it.”

Now, for the sixth consecutive season, the Coyotes won’t show up in the playoffs. And, for a sixth consecutive season, the Ducks will. And the roots of both streaks go back to that Oct. 5 game.
