It will never not be a little weird to me to realize how popular the Fate franchise is, but the truth can't be denied: It's up there. Practically a household name among the nerdy and loaded enough to buy building-sized ads to put up outside E3, Type-MOON's baby has gone places, and continues to rise.

The English version of the hit mobile game, Fate/Grand Order has surpassed 5 million downloads since its release in June of 2017. Initially released in the U.S. and Canada, the global sensation has since expanded to be available in Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, and Vietnam on the Apple App Store and Google Play. Fate/Grand Order is currently available in over ten regions and five languages after overwhelming demand from fans across the globe.

The response in North America has been so strong that the mobile game will be kicking off its own special Fate/Grand Order U.S.A. Tour 2019 this year, beginning in Los Angeles, California and featuring special guests and never-before-seen exhibits. The mobile game also received critical acclaim with an Award for excellence in the “Games of the Year” category at the Japan Game Awards 2018 organized by the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA) this past September. In a press release by the Japan Game Awards, the association cites the game’s overwhelming support from its users as well as its excellence in providing “a vast worldview, strategic battles that require use of skills and Command Cards, a variety of unique characters with a cast of distinguished voice actors, all in a free-to-play title” among the reasons for their decision. And there's more. The Fate franchise as a whole celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, so Japan-local fans can soon visit Aniplex's planned celebratory events, including an exhibit in Roppongi and more to come.
This past month, the five-on-five heroic warfare simulator Dota 2 has seen a surge in popularity thanks to a custom game mode developed by the independent Drodo Studio. Simply titled “Dota Auto Chess,” it has launched Dota into some of its highest concurrent player counts in ages and drawn in new streamers and audiences. But its surging popularity seems on course to repeat the history of most popular multiplayer game mods: an original idea becoming someone else’s money-making machine.

Now, it seems like Valve wants in on the action. This would hardly be the first time that Valve has turned a fan mod into an incredibly successful official title. Counter-Strike, Dota, and Team Fortress all began their lives as mods for other titles. Given that Dota Auto Chess is growing at an incredible rate, it certainly makes sense for them to officially support the mod as Auto Chess enters what may very well prove to be its popularity prime.

This free custom game turns Dota 2 into a slower, more strategic experience, as the name suggests. It is so popular right now that rumours are starting to appear that Valve wants to acquire Dota Auto Chess from the creators and make it a Valve title. Remember that DotA started as a mod in Warcraft III, while even Counter-Strike’s origins can be traced back to a Half-Life mod. Therefore, it really isn’t much of a stretch to think that Valve could acquire the incredibly popular Dota Auto Chess. All the same, it would be a little awkward for Valve to acquire Auto Chess at this time considering that Artifact, a Dota-inspired CCG, released late last year and has reportedly been a massive failure so far. The game has lost the vast majority of its player base and has the unfortunate designation of being a premium title burdened with microtransactions.

On the other hand, others are casting doubt on whether Dota Auto Chess is truly as popular as it is being advertised, with many pointing to previous bugs that have inflated numbers in the past. In a Reddit post titled “PSA: Stop hyping up AUTO CHESS player numbers, they are most likely bugged,” a Dota 2 custom game creator offers his own skepticism. Pointing to both previous trends of custom games and experiences with bugs in the past, the custom creator concludes that a bug prevents many custom games from timely ending, bolstering concurrent players.
