Path of Exile: War for the Atlas expansion adds new weapons, armor, and gems from mmocs's blog

Grinding Gear Games launched the latest expansion for its action role-playing game Path of Exile today. War for the Atlas is available now on PC. It will come out for the Xbox One version later this month. War for the Atlas adds 32 new maps for the end-game and a new boss, the Elder. The expansion also adds new weapons, armor, and gems.

The update also adds new character customisation options, with four new skills gems focused on necromancy and six support gems. Lastly, it adds a new challenge league called the Abyss. There, you'll wander maps in search of cracks that nasties will spill out of. Follow the cracks and you'll find a bigger group of enemies climbing out of a hole in the ground. Slay them all and new cracks will appear, leading you to another hole, and so on. The enemies get more challenging as you progress and you get less time to clear them.

Even as a regular Path of Exile player I’ve never beaten The Shaper. It’s a long road to victory, capped off with the lengthiest and toughest boss fight in the game, but after talking with Chris Wilson, I don’t feel nearly so bad about my failure. He admits that he’s only ever managed to do it once. Path of Exile pulls no punches, not even for its creators. For one, these influenced maps are not just more challenging but more rewarding. These are the only items that can have special mods attached such as immunity to fire on the ground or extra support abilities acquired without needing sockets. The items you get in the areas depends on which boss controls it. Some players may prefer to get The Elder’s items, while others may want The Shaper’s stuff, and still others may want both. But you have to keep in mind that if you are farming The Shaper’s areas for his items, The Elder starts taking control and there will be fewer Shaper maps to play. As Wilson explained, even someone who wants to fight The Shaper may want to spend time beating back The Elder just so The Shaper can recover and acquire more maps.

Path of Exile: War for the Atlas contains over fifty new Unique Items, many of which have been designed by our community. This includes the Hungering Loop, a socketed ring that can absorb level 20 support gems and apply those effects to a socketed active skill.

Path of Exile has grown exponentially since the launch of Fall of Oriath, says managing director Chris Wilson. He credits the move to console and especially the launch in China for its recent success.
