Number
of Bitcoin ATMs Throughout the World Surpass 7,000
Available data shows that there are now over 7,000
Bitcoin ATMs installed across 75 countries, with some supporting multiple
cryptocurrencies like bitcoin cash, ether, dash, and litecoin. While some
ATMs only let users buy cryptocurrency, there are machines that let users buy
and sell. Some crypto ATMs even support privacy-centric currencies like XMR
and ZEC.
The first Bitcoin ATM was
installed in 2013, when a firm called Robocoin placed a machine in a
Vancouver coffee shop. Its customers were able to use it to trade BTC, and on
launch day saw a total of $10,000 worth of transactions. Over time,
competition heated up and now 42 firms install crypto ATMs.
The number of crypto ATMs being
installed has been growing rapidly, as in June 2019 the 5,000 mark was
surpassed. In November, another 1,000 ATMs had been installed, and an
additional 1,000 have been installed since then.
Past studies have shown that nearly two-thirds of all Bitcoin ATMs are located in
the United States, and that Canada is responsible for little
over 10% of the machines installed worldwide. Europe is the second most
popular continent, followed by Asia and South America. The number of Bitcoin
ATMs in Africa and Oceania was found to be extremely low.
