Maker
Foundation Moves Trademarks, Software IP to New Independent Foundation
The non-profit organization
behind the MakerDAO project, the Maker Foundation, has announced it’s transferring the
trademarks for both Maker and the Dai stablecoin as well as its software IP
to an independent, Denmark-based foundation called the Dai Foundation. The announcement reads:
"The Dai Foundation has been created
to safeguard certain intangible assets that underlie the MakerDAO system,
which should not be taken over by or transferred to a single for-profit
entity."
It adds, quoting the CEO of the
Maker Foundation Rune Christensen, that it is “committed to driving and
supporting the decentralization of the Maker Protocol.” According to
Christensen, the transfer of the trademarks to the Dai Foundation means the
community can “rest assured that these assets are safeguarded.”
The move comes roughly a month
after MakerDAO activated the Multi-Collateral Dai token, allowing
users to create Dai stablecoins backed by various assets, and the Dai Savings
Rate (DSR), allowing users to earn interest on their Dai holdings.
