European
Central Bank Should to Be ‘Ahead of the Curve’ on Stablecoins, Says Lagarde
The European Central Bank (ECB)
is reportedly looking to accelerate its effort when it comes to digital
currency, and to get “ahead of the curve” on stablecoins, said its president
Christine Lagarde during her debut press conference.
Lagarde pointed out central
banks like that of Britain, Canada, and other countries have shown interest
in the digital currency space, and urged the ECB to get Ahead of the curve.”
She added the ECB will establish clear objectives for its digital currency task
force by mid-2020. The ECB’s president said:
“My personal conviction is that, given the
developments we are seeing, not so much in the bitcoin segment but in the
stablecoins projects, and we only know of one at the moment but there are
others being explored and underway at the moment.”
She noted there’s “clearly
demand out there” that the ECB has to respond to.
