Now he is. And the Mariners are glad they found him.
Herrmann hit his first home run for Seattle, and Marco Gonzales pitched six solid innings to lead the Mariners to a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night.
Gonzales (9-5) gave up five hits while striking out seven in a 102-pitching outing. The lone run he gave up was Kole Calhoun’s sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1.
Considering how rough a first inning the left-hander had, Gonzales gladly took the outcome.
”It was a constant chess game,” Gonzales said.
He had no control over his sinker. His changeup wasn’t getting over the plate. And he was working with a catcher in Herrmann – called up from the minors in late-May – with whom he had no familiarity.
But after regular catcher Mike Zunino was placed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with a bruised left foot, it was up to Herrmann and Gonzales to figure things out.
”In that first inning, (Gonzales) did not have it. He really didn’t,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. ”I’ve been around a long time, and you see pitchers with six-to-seven years’ experience in this league that panic. They don’t have it, and they throw in the towel.
”It says a lot about his maturity and where he’s at.”
Gonzales escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first by getting Albert Pujols to ground into a double play.
”Give Gonzales some credit Tyler Kroft Jersey ,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. ”He made some pitches and got out of it.”
In the fifth, Guillermo Heredia’s line drive went over Justin Upton’s head in left field for an RBI double gave Seattle the lead back at 2-1.
In the seventh inning, Herrmann’s solo blast off reliever Miguel Almonte carried deep into the right-field bleachers. Not a bad ending for a guy who did not find out he was in the starting lineup until five hours before first pitch.
”I know a lot of pitchers here have a lot of confidence behind Mike behind the plate, and I hope I can gain that confidence from these guys as well,” said Herrmann, who was signed by the Mariners to a minor league deal in early April after being designated for assignment by Arizona at the end of spring training. ”I am trying to do my part and fill in while he is gone.”
Dee Gordon tripled into the right-field corner with two outs, and Jean Segura greeted reliever Cam Bedrosian with a high-chopping RBI single to third baseman David Fletcher to extend Seattle’s lead to 4-1.
Gordon also saved a run in the eighth with his highlight-reel diving catch of Ian Kinsler’s line drive behind second base.
”It was just instincts. I just jumped as far as I could,” Gordon said.
Edwin Diaz struck out the side in the ninth to lock up his major league-leading 34th save.
The Mariners have not lost a home series since May 6, when they dropped two of three games to the Angels. They are 6-0-3 during that span.
Angels starter Jaime Barria (5-5) gave up two runs in 5 1/3 innings.
HERNANDEZ BACK `BETTER’
Seattle right-hander Felix Hernandez insists he feels much better before his scheduled start Friday against Colorado than he did nearly a week ago.
Hernandez tweaked his back during a workout in Baltimore. It tightened on him before his start Saturday against Kansas City – one in which he surrendered three earned runs before recording an out in a 6-4 victory. With the help of heat and ice packs Quintin Demps Jersey , and more stretching, Hernandez’s back has felt better this week. He even threw an abbreviated bullpen session.
”I am better today, more loose,” Hernandez said. ”I will be fine.”

Via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, the Lions and defensive end Ziggy Ansah won’t be striking a multi-year contract. This means that Ansah, a first-round pick in 2013, will spend a sixth season with the Lions, at a franchise tender of $17.143 million.
G.M. Bob Quinn told PFT Live in March that the Lions weren’t likely to sign Ansah to a long-term contract Youth Malik Jefferson Jersey , opting instead to give new coach Matt Patricia a chance to evaluate Ansah before making a decision about the future. If the Lions choose to keep Ansah under the tag in 2019, he’ll be entitled to a 20-percent raise over his 2018 salary, which equates to $20.57 million.
Ansah has been an up-and-down performer for the Lions. He followed a career-high 14.5 sacks in 2015 with only 2.0 in 2016; injuries limited his effectiveness that year, even though he missed only three games. In 2017, he rebounded with 12.0 sacks in 14 games.

TORONTO — Toronto Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ will take the mound against Luis Severino on Saturday in a repeat of the Opening Day matchup won by the New York Yankees.
With the July 31 deadline for trades without waivers looking, Happ is considered a prime candidate to be dealt and the Yankees would be one of the interested teams, according to speculation.
The possibility of Severino (13-2, 1.98 ERA) and Happ (10-4, 4.03) soon becoming teammates adds another intriguing dimension to their matchup in the second game of a three-game series at the Rogers Centre.
The Blue Jays started the series with a 6-2 victory Friday night with Justin Smoak capping a five-run second inning with a three-run homer.
The Yankees (56-29) are 7-4 against the Blue Jays (41-46) in the season series so far Adidas Mikko Rantanen Jersey , including a 4-3 record at the Rogers Centre as they complete their third and final series of the season there this weekend.
The win Friday ended the Blue Jays’ four-game losing streak against the Yankees.
Severino is an obvious choice for the All-Star Game to be played at Washington’s Nationals Park on July 17.

The 24-year-old enters Saturday with a scoreless streak of 13 2/3 innings. He has allowed three runs or fewer in 15 straight starts, the longest such streak by a Yankees pitcher since Ron Guidry had a 15-game streak April 8-June 22, 1978. The only longer streak by a Yankee is 20 set by Russ Ford during the 1910 and 1911 seasons.
“I always feel great when Sevy’s on the mound,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “The record in a lot of ways speaks for itself. The ability to get deep into games. He’s been really good against the elite competition, it seems like, as well.
“He’s putting himself in that conversation as one of the best in the game. There’s no doubt about it.”
Severino is 2-3 with a 4.12 ERA in nine career games (eight starts) against the Blue Jays and 2-0 with a 0.71 ERA in two starts against them this season. In five career starts at the Rogers Centre, he is 1-1 with a 2.81 ERA.
Happ had his worst start of the season Sunday when he allowed seven runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings in a 9-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers.
He did not allow a run until the fifth when Nicholas Castellanos did most of the damage with a grand slam.

The Baltimore Ravens and Chicago Bears will launch the NFL's 99th season by playing in the annual Hall of Fame game on Aug. 2.The Ravens' first appearance in the Hall of Fame game, which launches the league's 2018 Enshrinement Week. The Atlanta Falcons have signed offensive lineman Austin Pasztor and cornerback Leon McFadden to one-year extensions one day before the backups would have become unrestricted free agents.
After starting in all 16 games for the Cleveland Browns in 2016, Pasztor signed with Atlanta during training camp last season. He played in seven games as a backup tackle.
Pasztor Joseph Noteboom Jersey , 27, made 23 starts in three seasons with Jacksonville from 2012-14 before two seasons with the Browns.
McFadden, 27 Terrell Owens Jersey , signed with Atlanta in Week 4 last season and did not appear in a game. He was a third-round pick by Cleveland in 2013 and played in nine games with Dallas in 2016.

The Chiefs picked Duvernay-Tardif in the sixth round of the 2014 draft Marshall Faulk Jersey , but despite playing at a smaller Canadian school, he quickly earned a starting job. But he never gave up his pursuit of medicine, spending time each offseason doing school work and hospital rotations.
Duvernay-Tardif posted a photo of himself on social media after commencement wearing a lab coat with ”Dr. Duvernay-Tardif” across the back and his No. 76 in Chiefs colors. ”This is it!” he said. ”Today I become a doctor! It also marks the beginning of a great new adventure.”

Heading into the 2018 season, Saints quarterback Drew Brees and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady are tied on the career passing touchdowns list: Both have thrown exactly 488 touchdowns in their career.
That puts them 51 behind Peyton Manning’s all-time career record of 539, and over the next couple years they’ll race to see which one gets there first.
It’s unlikely that either will break Manning’s record in 2018: Brady’s career high in touchdown passes is 50 Michael Gallup Jersey , and Brees’ career high is 46, so it will probably be 2019 before either one of them gets to Manning.
But assuming they both play at least two more years and both stay healthy, they should both top Manning’s touchdown mark. They could even find themselves in a situation where they’re both breaking each other’s record on a regular basis. The Lions would stun everyone if they took a quarterback No. 20 overall Thursday night with many millions invested in Matthew Stafford, or a wide receiver with more than a few options on the team. They could justify bolstering coach Matt Patricia's first team at any other position, especially defensive end and offensive guard.
UP FRONT
The Lions were last in the league in rushing and have been among the NFL's worst offensively on the ground in recent years. Even if they made a bold move to trade up and select Penn State running back Saquon Barkley, it may not matter if the offensive line doesn't improve. There seem to be four solid blockers: tackles Taylor Decker and Ricky Wagner, guard T.J. Lang and center Graham Glasgow. The team's fifth option, Wesley Johnson, isn't likely an attractive option; the New York Jets didn't want to re-sign him.
That may all add up to Detroit drafting a guard or center in the first round.
"I have no problem taking an interior offensive lineman Samson Ebukam Jersey ," Quinn said.
ON THE EDGE
Detroit desperately needs help at defensive end because Ezekiel Ansah is playing on a franchise tag, possibly in his last year with the team. Quinn plans to make picks based on what the team will need up to 18 months away.
"We kind of look that far, knowing that guys are going to be unrestricted free agents after this year, but also the following year," Quinn said. "There's a really good balance there that we have to talk about and kind of envision our needs not just for today, but in the years ahead."
The other options at defensive end such as Anthony Zettel and Kerry Hyder, who missed all of last season with an Achilles tendon injury, don't generate much excitement.
MAYBE LATER
Quinn may choose a running back in a later round, hoping to find a flyer. He did add another former Patriot, LeGarrette Blount Marqise Lee Jersey , to the position to compete with Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick.
"If we had to go play a football game today, I think we have enough running backs to be competitive," Quinn said.

Patricia is an NFL head coach for the first time entering the draft, but he has a lot of experience with Quinn because they worked together with the Patriots for a dozen years.

The Seattle Seahawks released Boykin from its practice squad Tuesday after WFAA-TV in Dallas posted an interview with Boykin’s girlfriend in which she alleged he broke her jaw.
Boykin, 24, has denied the allegations Bruce Ellington Jersey , and his agent Drew Pittman told the station the allegations are false. Calls to Pittman by The Associated Press went unanswered Wednesday.
The assault allegation is the latest off-field issue for Boykin, who has spent his NFL career with Seattle.
He was arrested in Dallas last year when a vehicle he was a passenger in hit several people on a sidewalk. He fled the scene on foot but was later arrested on misdemeanor charges of public intoxication and possession of marijuana.
In 2015, Boykin was arrested for assaulting a police officer and public intoxication shortly before the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio during his senior season at TCU. Boykin La'el Collins Jersey , who was the team’s quarterback, was suspended for the bowl game.

Jeff Green started in his place and scored 19 points in the victory in Boston. Neither player can match the all-around production the Warriors get from Draymond Green, with his defense, rebounding and passing. All he has to do is keep his emotions in check. Edge: Warriors.
SMALL FORWARD: Kevin Durant vs. LeBron James. Durant was last year’s NBA Finals MVP, is the No. 3 scorer by average among players who have played at least 10 finals games (32.9 points), and still might be the second-best forward in this series. That’s how good James remains at 33 Calvin Johnson Jersey , as he proved while averaging 34 points, 9.2 rebounds and 8.8 assists in the Eastern Conference playoffs. In his eighth straight NBA Finals, he probably needs to produce numbers like that in every game to give the Cavaliers any chance. Edge: Cavaliers.
SHOOTING GUARD: Klay Thompson vs. J.R. Smith. The Warriors might not even be here without Thompson’s clutch performance in Game 6 of the West finals against Houston. He can heat up in a hurry from the outside, and as an added benefit no longer has to spend so much energy defending Kyrie Irving as he did so often in the last two NBA Finals. Smith can also heat up, but can also be prone to prolonged bad streaks and losses of concentration, and the Warriors feast on those. Edge: Warriors.
POINT GUARD: Stephen Curry vs. George Hill. Injured to start the postseason, Curry showed just how explosive he and the Warriors remain with some big third quarters in the West finals. There were questions as he struggled earlier in that series if he still wasn’t fully healthy, but he sure looked good enough at the end. Hill is a steady veteran and the most productive of the four players the Cavaliers acquired at the trade deadline, but like a lot of Cavaliers will be at a speed disadvantage in this series. Edge: Warriors.
RESERVES: Andre Iguodala Aqib Talib Jersey , Shaun Livingston, Nick Young, McGee, Bell, David West, Pachulia, Quinn Cook and Patrick McCaw vs. Kyle Korver, Jeff Green, Jordan Clarkson Golden Tate III Jersey , Larry Nance Jr., Rodney Hood, Jose Calderon and Cedi Osman. Iguodala’s health looms as the biggest question entering the series after he was sidelined for much of the West finals with a bone bruise in his leg. The 2015 NBA Finals MVP leads the defensive effort against James and is part of the Warriors’ best lineup. Korver’s shooting is a key off the Cleveland bench, but Clarkson, Nance and Hood have never become regularly reliable after being acquired in February. Edge: Warriors.
COACHES: Steve Kerr vs. Tyronn Lue. This was a challenging season for both. Lue stepped away from his team for a while for health reasons, as Kerr had to do during the last two seasons. Kerr acknowledged the struggles of keeping his team motivated this season, even letting the players coach themselves in timeouts during one game. Both coaches pushed the right buttons when their teams were pushed to the brink in earlier rounds, but Kerr just has more of them at his disposal. Edge: Warriors.
