LANDOVER Joel Heath Jersey White , Md. (AP) — Justin Reid intercepted the ball in the end zone and saw nothing but green grass in front of him.“I saw the daylight and I have to hit it,” Reid said. “I wasn’t going to let anyone stop me.”No one’s stopping the Houston Texans right now.Reid’s 101-yard interception return touchdown was the big play Houston needed to overcome a mistake-prone Deshaun Watson and beat the Washington Redskins 23-21 on Sunday, tying the franchise record with their seventh consecutive victory. From a gruesome , season-ending injury to Redskins quarterback Alex Smith to three turnovers, it wasn’t pretty, but the Texans (7-3) became the first team since the 1925 New York Giants to win seven in a row after starting 0-3.“With this team, you never know where the play’s going to come from,” defensive end J.J. Watt said. “You never know who’s going to make it — offense, defense, special teams — but you’ve got to find a way. For the seventh time, we found a way.”While Watson was 16 of 24 for 208 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, Smith broke his right tibia and fibula on a sack by Kareem Jackson midway through the third quarter and will require surgery. Smith’s right leg turned the wrong way in eerily similar fashion to Joe Theismann’s broken leg on a Lawrence Taylor sack exactly 33 years ago to the day.“I know it was very painful for him and heartbreaking for a lot of people,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. “He’s a great guy and hard worker and one of the key leaders on this football team. These things happen in pro football, unfortunately. Just hate to see them happen with a guy like Alex.”Colt McCoy replaced Smith and threw for a touchdown pass and led a long scoring drive for Washington (6-4), which likely will have to rely on the journeyman quarterback the rest of the way. When a McCoy-led drive finished with an Adrian Peterson touchdown to put the Redskins up 21-20 early in the fourth quarter http://www.thetexanslockerroom.com/authentic-zach-cunningham-jersey , it was the first lead change in a game involving the Redskins all season.“You pray for opportunities to get to play,” said McCoy, who was 6 of 12 for 54 yards. “You don’t like to see it how it happened today.”Houston went ahead for good on a 54-yard field goal by Ka’imi Fairbairn, who missed a 44-yarder earlier. The winning streak stayed alive when Redskins kicker Dustin Hopkins missed a 63-yard field-goal attempt with 3 seconds left.“We just have belief,” Watson said. “Everyone keeps fighting. No one is doubting each other. Regardless, we try to play complementary football, but when the offense needs the defense to help us out, they do that and vice-versa.”EMPTY SEATSEven though there were plenty of empty seats and a total attendance of 61,593 that was far below a sellout, Redskins cornerback Josh Norman called the crowd “electrifying.” Norman last week criticized fans for not having players’ backs at home and said the team plays better on the road.“What an atmosphere, right?” Norman said. “You guys came out and you showed up in a big way. We can’t be more proud and excited to be among you guys. … I applaud you all, for sure.”PETERSON’S UP AND DOWN DAYPeterson ran for two touchdowns to continue climbing the NFL rushing chart, but was bottled up on a lot of his other carries. Peterson’s 3- and 7-yard TD runs gave him 105 in his career and moved him past former Redskins star John Riggins into sole possession of sixth all time, one behind Jim Brown for fifth.Peterson finished with 51 yards on 16 carries.QUIET THOMASIn his second game with the Texans, Demaryius Thomas was a non-factor. Watson only threw his way twice — once on a play wiped out by a penalty — and the former Broncos receiver did not have a catch.Thomas stayed in Houston during the bye week in Houston to study the playbook and watch film after making a handful of newcomer mistakes in his debut. Thomas had three catches for 61 yards in that game, but disappeared from the offense Sunday.MR. RELEVANTWashington receiver Trey Quinn made a major impact in his return after missing more than two months with a high-ankle sprain. Quinn Jordan Thomas Jersey White , who was “Mr. Irrelevant” caught four passes for 49 yards starting in place of injured wideout Jamison Crowder and would have been the emergency QB had McCoy gone down.INJURIESTexans: RG Zach Fulton left with a shoulder injury on the first drive, and LG Senio Kelemete left with an ankle injury in the second quarter. … CB Aaron Colvin missed his seventh game in a row with an ankle injury.Redskins: DL Jonathan Allen was evaluated for a concussion but returned. … Crowder missed his sixth consecutive game with an ankle injury, RB Chris Thompson his third consecutive game with injured ribs and LT Trent Williams his third consecutive game after surgery for a dislocated right thumb.UP NEXTTexans: Host the division rival Tennessee Titans on Monday, Nov. 26.Redskins: Visit the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day. Let’s see which position group you place more value on."When you read what’s once again becoming an endless sea of free agent and mock draft prediction pieces from all corners of the sportsphere, it’s pretty obvious most fall into one of two camps. Either people feel Houston’s cornerback group is far more important than the offensive line, or they feel the opposite. With that in mind, it’s time to see what you, the diehard core of Houston Texans fandom, thinks. Are you all in for an offensive tackle, or do you prefer to see opposing wide receivers tackled by a blue chip, shutdown cornerback? Here’s a sales pitch for each school of thought: HOUSTON TEXANS UPGRADE THE OFFENSIVE LINEWith the NFL slanting further and further towards the offense in an effort to make the game more exciting, the need to protect Houston’s first ever franchise quarterback is greater than it’s ever been in anytime in Texans history. Additionally, with Bill O’Brien and new offensive coordinator Tim Kelly’s (or “Bill O’Brien, Jr.” as some in these parts refer to him) unrelenting commitment to the run game, having large, mobile bodies that can move the defensive front seven out of the way for Lamar Miller and company to gobble up yards is a need for sure. If Ju’Wuan James can keep [NAME REDACTED] from taking a sack Johnathan Joseph Jersey , imagine what he could do for Deshaun Watson. HOUSTON TEXANS BOLSTER THE CORNERBACK GROUPWith stalwarts like Andrew Luck going against Houston’s secondary twice a year (or three times, in some cases), having shutdown corners who won’t allow T.Y. Hilton to run to the Hall of Fame from purely inside the confines of a division rivalry is seemingly a must. Providing the few extra (split) seconds of coverage allows the Houston front seven to get to the opposing quarterback and notch those precious coverage sacks. With the new, unspoken NFL rule that you can tackle J.J. Watt on any given play if you happen to be an opposing offensive lineman, Watt, Jadeveon Clowney, Whitney Mercilus and the rest of Houston’s pass rushers need every competitive edge they can get to overcome the NFL’s bias against defense. The argument can easily be made to support either way of thinking, but when the tampering period begins and the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft comes Houston’s way, they’ll need to focus on one or the other. Thankfully, Houston has the cap space and draft capital to address both areas, but they can’t both be the #1 priority. If you were able to focus on one need for Houston, which would it be?
When Aaron Jones crossed the goal line early in the second quarter Cortez Kennedy Jersey Green , capping a 75-yard drive that gave Green Bay a 14-7 lead at Minnesota, the Packers again put themselves in favorable position for a victory on the road against a winning team. That's a formula coach Mike McCarthy's backsliding bunch has yet to figure out this year.Unlike so many of his past teams with Aaron Rodgers at the helm, these Packers just keep on stumbling down the stretch. Now they'll probably need a perfect finish to squeeze into the playoffs.Kirk Cousins passed for 342 yards and three touchdowns without a turnover for the Vikings, who overtook the depleted Packers for a 24-17 victory on Sunday ."We'll see what we're made of for the last five weeks," Rodgers said. "Are we going to stick together through these tough times, or are we going to start splintering? I'd like to think that the leadership is in place that we can stick together through whatever happens, but these five weeks will show it."The Packers went three and out on their first possession, only because Davante Adams accidentally stepped out of bounds before making what would've been a chain-moving catch on third down. Then Rodgers finished the second drive with a vintage back-shoulder touchdown throw to Adams , before Jones raced around left end on a crack toss sweep that Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said afterward was a perfect call for the defensive play he had dialed up.But the Packers went three-and-out the next time they had the ball and didn't score again until a field goal with 2:20 left in the fourth quarter. Over their final seven possessions, they punted five times and had a turnover on downs when Jones was stopped on fourth-and-inches midway through the third quarter at their 44-yard line. On that final drive, Adams had what would've been a touchdown catch on third-and-1 at the 20 slip through his hands."Our third down has been our black eye," McCarthy said. The Packers (4-6-1) fell into 10th place in the NFC. They were beaten up, mentally and physically, by this five-game slog with losses on the road against the Rams (10-1), Patriots (8-3), Seahawks (6-5) and Vikings (6-4-1) when they were either tied or leading as late as the third quarter in each of those four games. The schedule softens, with four losing teams on the slate: home games against the Cardinals (2-9), Falcons (4-7) and Lions (4-7) and a trip to play the Jets (3-8) following a rematch with the NFC North-leading Bears (8-3) on the road. There's a legitimate question, though, about whether the Packers have enough steam left to win out like they did in 2016 with six straight victories to win the division at 10-6 and reach the NFC championship game."I knew we had a tough stretch. Four really tough places to play," Rodgers said. "I didn't think we'd go 1-4 on that stretch, but that's where we're at. We're here: 4-6-1. We have to win our last five, and even that might not be enough."This will be the first time since Rodgers took over as the starter in 2008 that the Packers don't reach double-digit wins in the regular season when Rodgers doesn't miss any games to injuries. They were 7-9 in 2017 and 8-7-1 in 2013 when Rodgers broke his collarbone. They were 6-10 in 2008.The injuries are the most tangible reason why the Packers might not be able to recover to reach the playoffs this year. Already missing several starters, they saw left tackle David Bakhtiari, left guard Lane Taylor, wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown, wide receiver/kick returner Trevor Davis and safety Kentrell Brice all leave the game with injuries. The Packers, though, have been missing that mojo they've had so often in the Rodgers era all year long. This was their season low in points (14) and yards (254)."Sitting on the sideline, we kept asking ourselves why we're so unlucky," said Jones, who had 93 total yards on 20 touches. He added: "You can tell the guys in this locker room want it. We want it more than anyone else, and we're right there each and every game http://www.seahawkslockerroom.com/authentic-brett-hundley-jersey , but it feels like it gets taken from us." THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams used their first pick Saturday to grab a potential starter up front on their defense, and they used their last pick on a guy from Last Chance U.The NFC champions made their sixth trade of the draft in the morning, moving up for defensive tackle Greg Gaines in the fourth round. Coach Sean McVay said the Washington product could be the replacement for Ndamukong Suh, the imposing nose tackle on Los Angeles’ Super Bowl team. And with the 251st overall pick at the back of the seventh round, the Rams chose linebacker Dakota Allen. The Texas Tech product is better known from his time on the Netflix reality show “Last Chance U.,” which chronicled his football comeback through community college after a burglary charge in 2016.After emerging from the three-day draft hungry and tired from what he described as accidental intermittent fasting, general manager Les Snead felt the Rams had addressed their most pressing needs.“The first priority was to try to figure out how we could … draft Gaines to fill the nose tackle-type spot in our base defense,” Snead said of Saturday’s work. “And then from there, it was, ‘OK, where can we find players who can help their position coach as well as Bones (special teams coordinator John Fassel)?'”Gaines, who grew up in nearby La Habra, seems likely to get the chance to emerge from training camp as the starting nose tackle for the Rams, who are expecting Suh to leave as a free agent. Gaines was the second Washington defensive player drafted by the Rams, joining second-round pick Taylor Rapp.“I’ve watched Aaron Donald a lot on film and studied a lot of his techniques,” Gaines said of the Rams’ All-Pro superstar. “It’s going to be amazing to learn from him firsthand. I think he’s going to really help me improve as a player.”Allen’s career with the Red Raiders was derailed by his arrest, but Texas Tech ultimately welcomed him back to the program. The Rams voiced no concerns about Allen’s character after a single misstep.“There were people at Texas Tech who definitely fought for him to get a second chance, based on who he was,” Snead said. “Great phone call. I think it was one of our favorites, because you could tell he was definitely appreciative to get this opportunity.”The Rams’ other Saturday selections were Wisconsin offensive tackle David Edwards and Penn State safety Nick Scott.WHO THEY GOTAlong with Gaines and Allen, the Rams chose three defensive backs and two offensive linemen with their eight picks, adding depth at perceived areas of need and on special teams. They made their biggest splash in the third round by choosing running back Darrell Henderson.SURPRISE MOVEThe Rams raised eyebrows by using a relatively high pick on Henderson, an elite ball carrier from Memphis. His high placement in the draft strongly indicated he’ll get carries that would have gone to Gurley, one of the busiest players in the league over his first four seasons. But McVay insists the Rams aren’t worried about Gurley’s left knee, which slowed him late last season. McVay envisions Henderson as a complementary, change-of-pace back who will allow Los Angeles’ offensive mastermind to add new wrinkles to his scheme.HOW THEY DIDMost observers thought the Rams would attempt to land a higher-profile defensive lineman with an earlier pick, but Gaines is a solid prospect — and one the Rams clearly favored after watching him in the Senior Bowl. While Gaines probably has the best chance to be a rookie starter out of the Rams’ eight picks, the NFC champs are still confident they got depth for an already solid roster. “That’s a credit to where we are, going into our third year,” McVay said. “There’s a vision for all eight of these guys and how they fit within the framework of our roster.”WHAT’S NEXT?The Rams must decide whether Gaines is ready to start right away. Two vacant starting jobs remain on the offensive line, but in-house candidates Joseph Noteboom and Brian Allen are the front-runners after spending last season as rookie backups. Los Angeles likely could use another inside linebacker. McVay will have plenty of time to implement his plans for Henderson as well.
Hottest Take of the Week: Preseason Week 2 features Tim Boyle & Jake Kumerow With the second week of Preseason complete Dexter Williams Green Bay Packers Jersey , the takes have begun to shift from Aaron Rodgers to the rest of the Green Bay Packers.Everyone’s favorite General Custer, Andy Benoit, went on a bit of a Twitter rant. His takefest culminated in a scorcher involving the made up stat, #QBWinz.Next, Matub gets introspective as he revisits old takes on Tim “Golden” Boyle. This week, the Green Bay Packers take the field on Monday night for the only time in the 2018 season as they host the scuffling San Francisco 49ers to close out the NFL’s week six schedule. This game is the final contest before the Packers’ bye week and gives them a chance to head into an off weekend with some momentum before facing a difficult several weeks when they return to action.Following that bye, the Packers have back-to-back road games in Los Angeles against the Rams and in Foxboro to play the Patriots — two teams that have combined for an 8-2 record through five weeks. Getting a win against the banged-up Niners is almost a must-have with those two games on the other side of the break.Interestingly Color Rush Dexter Williams Jersey , this is the first time the Packers and 49ers have played at Lambeau Field since the 2013 Wild Card playoffs and the first time in the regular season since 2012.Here’s how to tune in for Monday’s game and all the items you’ll need to get up to speed in time for kickoff.WHO?San Francisco 49ers (1-4) vs. Green Bay Packers (2-2-1)WHEN?Monday, October 15, 20187:15 PM Central Time (8:15 PM Eastern)WHERE?Lambeau FieldGreen Bay, WisconsinHOW?TV BroadcastESPNCommentators: Joe Tessitore, Jason Witten Tramon Williams Jersey , Anthony McFarland, Lisa SaltersOnline StreamingESPN.com or ESPN appRadio BroadcastPackers Radio NetworkWestwood One SportsANYTHING ELSE?OddsPackers favored by 9.5 pointsOver/under total: 46.5Last MeetingWeek 4 2015: Packers 17, @49ers 3All-Time Head-to-Head RecordRegular Season: Packers lead 31-27-1Playoffs: Packers lead 4-3
Week 1 Fantasy Football Start/Sit Advice: Who to play or bench in the NFC North In fantasy football Womens Corey Linsley Jersey , Week 1 is a difficult week to forecast. Of course, there are the ones you should consistently start unless they’re on a bye, but there are always those who are still a mystery. New offenses, new coaches, and new weapons can raise a lot of question marks, especially in Week 1. These teams could end up being anything! Before the season starts, we’re going to try our best to rationalize who to sit and who to start during the first week in the NFC North. We have one NFC North rivalry matchup, while Minnesota and Detroit have difficult games both inside and outside of the conference.StartsAaron Rodgers, QBBears @ PackersThis is a given, but needs to be acknowledged in light of the Bears’ acquisition of Khalil Mack. It’s a matchup that we could be talking about for years now. Mack is an all-world defensive player and it really perplexes me that Jon Gruden traded him out of Oakland. Seriously, if I’m power ranking defensive players it’d go: Aaron Donald, Mack http://www.packerslockerroom.com/authentic-marcedes-lewis-jersey , and Jalen Ramsey, in that order. But Mack doesn’t play defensive back, defensive tackle, or inside linebacker. What I’m saying is that the Bears didn’t fix their entire defense. While Mack may be able to elevate them, there are still other areas of opportunity for Rodgers to exploit them. And Aaron Rodgers has owned the Bears during his career to the tune of 42 touchdowns and just nine interceptions in 19 games.Adam Thielen, WR49ers @ VikingsDon’t be worried about starting Thielen against the Niners. Richard Sherman is the new top guy in San Francisco, but he’s coming off an Achilles injury. Those are tough to come back from even with today’s advancements. The backpedaling and the need to plant and change direction for a defensive back at age 30 is paramount to success. The Niners were still 27th in DVOA against WR1’s last year so that’s a long way to climb even with Sherman.Matthew Stafford, QBJets @ LionsIn case you waited for a deep round quarterback selection, I hope you went with Stafford. The Jets shelled out good money for Trumaine Johnson this offseason, but he can’t cover Marvin Jones Jr., Golden Tate and Kenny Golladay all at once. Morris Claiborne is still the CB2 for the Jets, but he’s still not good. At home last season Jermaine Whitehead Jersey , Stafford threw 17 touchdowns and only three picks last season. There could be some early season rust, but being at home makes it easy for Stafford.SitsJamaal Williams, RBThis is the hill I’ve been willing to die on all offseason. Williams is fine, but I’m fading this option in Week 1. I think the Packers would be best served getting Rodgers acquainted/reacquainted with his pass catchers. While Williams may find the end zone, he only had three games over 100 all-purpose yards last season with one of those being 100 yards on the ground. I’m not expecting over four yards per carry.Allen Robinson II, WRBears @ PackersYou probably drafted Robinson to be a flex or WR2 which is great, but you’re counting on a lot to click right away with the Bears offense. Not only did the Bears add a ton of weapons, but they’re instituting a new offense with Mitchell Trubisky at the helm. Robinson also hasn’t played in a year after an ACL tear in week one of 2017. The Packers have a lot to be left desired with their secondary as well, but I’d want to start more of a sure thing. For a game supposedly all about the quarterbacks, many other players are stealing the spotlight at the moment. The Patriots just took a 17-10 lead before the half, with wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson rushing for a touchdown in an injury depleted backfield.Patterson has five carries for 51 yards so far, as the Patriots adjust to the absence of Sony Michel. But that was just the beginning of the fireworks.Packers safety Jermaine Whitehead was ejected Womens Kevin King Jersey , after he slapped Patriots center David Andrews across the facemask. After blocking him on the play, Andrews grabbed a handful of Whitehead’s jersey and the two were jawing at each other. Whitehead reacted with a swat, not a punch by any stretch of the imagination, and relatively flimsy. That may have been why officials didn’t audibly announce that he was thrown out, but he was escorted away to the locker room. The Packers offense caught a bit of spark just before halftime, with Rodgers leading a 13-play, 79-yard drive. It nearly stalled at the goal line before Rodgers made an incredible individual play, rolling out to the left, buying time and finding Davante Adams in the front of the end zone.It was the kind of Rodgers play we’re expecting more of, as he plays chess with Tom Brady tonight.
SANTA CLARA Tom Rathman Jersey White , Calif. (AP) — The time to feel down about star quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s season-ending knee injury has passed. The San Francisco 49ers know they now must prepare to go ahead with the rest of what was supposed to be a promising season with backup C.J. Beathard at the helm instead of the player who immediately became the face of the franchise.“There’s a lot of people out there doubting us and counting us out,” Beathard said Wednesday. “I think everybody in the building is excited and we’re ready to get rolling and win some games moving forward.”There’s good reason to doubt the 49ers, who were 1-10 last year under Brian Hoyer and Beathard before Garoppolo took over as starter following a midseason trade from New England. He immediately injected life into a struggling franchise by winning all five of his starts to end last season. The 49ers (1-2) rewarded him in the offseason with a $137.5 million, five-year contract and entered this season with high hopes that might have been dashed when Garoppolo blew out his left knee when he planted and tried to cut up field rather than run out of bounds late in a 38-27 loss at Kansas City.Coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t try to sugarcoat the gloom when he delivered the bad news to his players Monday, telling them it was understandable to feel down. The players appreciated that sentiment even if they know they must move on and prepare for Sunday’s road game against the Los Angeles Chargers.“It’s cool to see your head coach acknowledge that, yeah, we all feel it for a little bit,” fullback Kyle Juszczyk said. “That’s OK to acknowledge it but we don’t need to dwell on it. We just need to find what we need to do to get better.”The Niners under Garoppolo were a dynamic offense. They ranked sixth in the league in scoring and in yards per play in eight starts with him under center. That was a big jump after ranking in the bottom 10 of the league in both categories before Garoppolo took over. The 49ers believe Beathard’s experience playing as a rookie, the opportunity to watch Garoppolo succeed in the offense and going through an entire offseason program will make Beathard a better player this time around. He got one snap last week after Garoppolo got hurt and threw a touchdown pass to George Kittle. The play was negated by a penalty, the 49ers settled for a field goal and the offense never got the ball back.“You see it in his decision making,” Juszczyk said. “He’s just much more decisive out there. You can tell things aren’t spinning in his head so much. He gets the ball out quick and has a lot of confidence.”Beathard started five games as a rookie last year, completing 54.9 percent of his passes with four touchdowns, six interceptions, 6.4 yards per attempt and a 69.2 passer rating that was second lowest in the NFL.He wasn’t helped by the fact leading receiver Pierre Garcon had gone down with a season-ending injury http://www.49erslockerroom.com/authentic-malcolm-smith-jersey , the running game was inconsistent and the offensive line was hampered by injuries. That contributed to Beathard taking 19 sacks last year but also allowed him to prove his toughness to his teammates.“That wasn’t exactly the situation I wanted to put C.J. into,” Shanahan said. “That’s why I think myself and a lot of our team earned a lot of respect for him. Not all the weeks, but some weeks, he was in a very tough situation. He never wavered, never saw his confidence change and when he eventually was benched and we put Jimmy in, you would think a guy would be less confident after that. You guys can ask him, but I truly believe he was more confident. Even though he struggled at times, he truly believed he could do it. Those are the kind of guys you want to go to battle with.”NOTES: San Francisco worked out several quarterbacks Tuesday but decided to promote Nick Mullens from the practice squad to serve as the backup for now. Like at Alabama, the Buckeyes are full of prospects. Nick Bosa is the obvious fit at number two. But the team could be interested in one of their receivers later on in the draft, or a lesser known player. Somebody always seems to emerge from these big schools in the NFL.The San Francisco 49ers contingent, including GM John Lynch and VP of player personnel Adam Peters, are at Ohio State’s pro day. They are planning to meet up with Nick Bosa for a late lunch. It doesn’t end there, though. According to Albert Breer of SI.com, the Ohio State defensive end is meeting and having dinner with the 49ers tonight. Bosa getting two meals out of this is the real pro move here.At first I’m wondering what else could they want to know from Bosa that they already don’t. Then I remember how much they are investing in the kid and taking advantage of every opportunity to meet with Bosa and pick his brain makes plenty of sense. Knowing the person is just as important as knowing the player. From a player standpoint, it’s tough to find a better fit than Bosa for the Niners. It’s no lock that the Arizona Cardinals are taking QB Kyler Murray. They still have to figure out a landing spot for QB Josh Rosen. If they can’t, then the Cardinals could snag Bosa. That’s when it gets interesting for the 49ers.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2019 has been announced http://www.seahawkslockerroom.com/authentic-shaquem-griffin-jersey , and while one much more important ex-Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman did not get the nod for induction, another one from the 1990s team did.Former center Kevin Mawae has received the call to go to Canton. He was with the Seahawks from 1994-1997, having been selected by Seattle in the second-round of the 1994 NFL Draft. Mawae was on the PFWA All-Rookie Team, but the bulk of his success came with the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans, racking up eight Pro Bowl selections, seven first-team All-Pro honors, and he’s on the 2000s NFL All-Decade Team. Mawae retired after the 2009 season.Mawae was the only offensive lineman to get into the Pro Football HOF, meaning former Seahawks left guard Steve Hutchinson, ex-Pittsburgh Steelers star guard Alan Faneca, and ex-Jacksonville Jaguars tackle Tony Boselli will have to wait another year. The full class is as follows:Ed Reed, safety (Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, and New York Jets)Champ Bailey, cornerback (Washington and Denver Broncos)Kevin Mawae, center (Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans)Ty Law, cornerback (New England Patriots, New York Jets Russell Wilson Jersey , Kansas City Chiefs, and Denver Broncos)Tony Gonzalez, tight end (Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons)Johnny Robinson, flanker and defensive back (Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs)Pat Bowlen, majority owner (Denver Broncos)Gil Brandt, executive (Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, and Dallas Cowboys)The 2019 Hall of Fame Game will occur on August 1st, with all eight men getting enshrined on August 3rd. In the wake of Super Bowl LIII there has been no shortage of praise thrown at the New England Patriots and their offensive line coach, Dante Scarnecchia, for both the job the offensive line did in protecting Tom Brady and the diversity of the team’s rushing attack in the Super Bowl. However, the success of the Patriots in these two areas is not random, and stems from a word that is talked about quite a bit regarding offensive lines: Continuity. Fans are likely tired of hearing this word over and over from pundits, coaches and other observers, but large parts of the Patriots success over the past two decades can be traced back to this concept. Here is the type of run game diversity that New England is able to runas a result of their continuity, and as a result of not having to teach new guys new concepts season after season.Specifically, the Patriots successfully manage the offensive line by maintaining continuity over the years by limiting the number of rookies starting in any given season. To that point, here is the number of games rookie offensive linemen for the Pats have started since the spring of 1999 when Pete Carroll moved Dante Scarnecchia from special teams coach to offensive line coach for the team. Games started by rookie offensive linemen for the New England Patriots since 1999SeasonGames Started by RookieSeasonGames Started by Rookie What immediately jumps out from that table are two seasons - 2005 and 2015 - as they are obviously far above the norm for the number of games rookie linemen started for the team. It’s no coincidence that 2015 is the season for in which the Pats fell to the Broncos in the AFC Championship Game in which Brady took four sacks and 17 hits. That was the game that led the Patriots to decide not to renew Dave DeGuglielmo’s contract as offensive line coach, and to bring Scarnecchia back from his two year retirement. However Doug Baldwin Jersey , that 2015 season laid the foundation for the Patriots line for the foreseeable future. Those 30 games started by rookies came from: Guard Shaq Mason, 10 startsCenter David Andrews, 11 startsGuard Tre’ Jackson, 9 startsNow, Jackson saw his career derailed by a knee injury, and missing the 2016 season on PUP and being out of football in 2017 and 2018, he’s still trying to make things work in the Alliance of American Football. He just turned 26, which makes him five months younger than George Fant, so he still may have a future in the NFL if his knee heals, however, his story is a different tangent that is not the focus of this piece. The focus of this piece is the simple fact that since the 2015 took their lumps by starting three rookie offensive linemen two of those linemen have continued to develop into high caliber players. Specifically, since that season Mason and Andrews have combined to start 91 of 96 possible games for New England, and neither of them is anywhere near old. Mason will turn 26 just days before the 2019 season and Andrews will turn 27 just prior to the start of training camp. That’s forty percent of the offensive line about which the Patriots don’t have to worry, and then there’s Joe Thuney. Thuney has played basically every single snap possible during his three years in New England since being drafted in the third round of the 2016 draft, and it would be quite a shock if Bill Belichick doesn’t sign Thuney to an extension sometime over the next year. That would lock up the core of the Patriots line for the foreseeable future, as Andrews is under contract through 2020 and Mason is signed through 2023. In short, the Patriots have established a young core for the offensive line to provide holes for the run game and protect Tom Brady, and a huge piece of the establishment of that foundation was the fact that the team bit the bullet and used three rookie starters in 2015. Perhaps they should send a Super Bowl ring to Dave DeGuglielmo for helping establish that young core.
It was another heartbreaking 34-32 loss for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday at Raymond James stadium. The team finishes the season 5-11 for the second straight year and changes are likely coming to the coaching staff. While it was another somber ending to a season for the Buccaneers Peyton Barber Jersey , many players showed up and showed out on Sunday, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Here are the top performers from the week 17 loss. QB Jameis Winston: Whatever it is, Winston has played some of the best football of his career against the Atlanta Falcons. From the second possession on, Winston was nearly flawless. He finished the game completing 22 of 35 passes for 341 yards and four touchdowns. He did throw an interception, but it wasn’t his fault as the pass deflected off of Mike Evans hands. It was another week in which Winston was in full control from the get go and made good decisions all game long. It was a nice season ending game for Winston and a game that made it all but certain that that Winston will be back in 2019. WR Mike Evans: On a day in which Mike Evans broke the single season receiving record for the Buccaneers by surpassing Mark Carrier’s 1,422 yard mark back in 1989, he also had a heck of a game. In other words, the sky is blue. Evans finished the day with six catches on 9 targets for 106 yards and two touchdowns. It was a typical Mike Evans game and he also became the youngest receiver in NFL history to reach the 6,000 yard mark. Evans will finish the season with 86 catches for 1,524 yards and 8 touchdowns. Ever since being drafted, Evans has been everything the buccaneers could have wanted and more and he and Winston will continue to grow together for years to come. Chris Godwin: Deja Vu? If you remember, it was week 17 of last season where Chris Godwin had his coming out party at home against the New Orleans Saints. This year, he left no doubt in the minds of Buccaneer fans that he will be the teams #2 receiver going forward. Godwin finished the day with 6 catches on 9 targets for 114 yards and two touchdowns. It was a nice way to end the season for Godwin after having a rough couple of weeks, but you can tell the chemistry between he and Winston is on the rise. With the three main targets being Evans, Godwin and Howard next season, whoever the coach is will have a ton of talent to work with. Lavonte David: One of the leaders of the defense for many years now, David closed the 2018 season out in typical fashion. He finished the game with 9 tackles, 7 of them being solo ones. He made a couple key stops on third down early in the game and was solid as usual throughout. David should and most likely will be back for Tampa Bay next season. Honorable mention: JPP, Carlton Davis, Cairo Santos. The Buccaneers finished their disappointing 2018 season on Sunday with a 34-32 home loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Things looked great for Tampa Bay throughout much of the first half. The home team held a 17-0 lead late in the second quarter, but a late touchdown for Atlanta sparked a 31-3 run. A 31-20 deficit didn’t put the Bucs away Ryan Smith Jersey , as back-to-back scores got them the lead back with 5:10 to go. From there, the Falcons killed the clock and won the game with a field goal as time expired. The Bucs put up a strong fight against their division rivals to close the season. There were plenty of guys that were important in the overall effort, so let’s get going with the final installment of Buccaneers of the Week for the 2018 season.Honorable MentionsThe secondary was shredded by Matt Ryan for most of the second half, but the first-half performance for the group was solid. Brent Grimes was especially good in the first 30 minutes, racking up three passes defended. His 2018 season as a whole was completely forgettable, but he did wrap it up with a nice day in what was surely his final game as a Buc... The secondary wasn’t great over the final 30 minutes, but Andrew Adams came up with a key interception to set the Tampa Bay offense for a go-ahead touchdown. Adams finished the season with a team-high four picks... Peyton Barber had a pretty nice day on the ground, rushing for 66 yards on 15 carries. With those numbers, he finished the 2018 season with 871 yards and five scores on 234 carries.5. Jason Pierre-Paul (One point)Sunday wasn’t a standout day for Jason Pierre-Paul, but it was still a solid one to cap off a very good season. It was the final game of the veteran’s first season in Tampa, and fittingly, he came up with a sack. That brought his 2018 total to 12.5, which was just four shy of the franchise record for most sacks in a single season. What Pierre-Paul did for the Buccaneer defensive line this season was huge. The unit was the worst in the NFL in 2017, and while it wasn’t the best one in 2018, it certainly improved greatly. Pierre-Paul also had a profound impact on the locker room, bringing some leadership that the defense badly needed. The fact that he came up with four tackles and a sack in the season finale was big, but a quarterback pressure in the fourth quarter that forced an interception was even bigger.Overall, Sunday’s game against the Falcons was pretty much a standard JPP game. Since the start of the year, Bucs fans have gotten used to production from the USF product. With an offseason of change coming, having Pierre-Paul in the locker room to usher in the transition will be a major plus. His leadership is backed up by his production. With a culture change needed, there aren’t too many better guys to have leading the way. One final point for Pierre-Paul to end the season wraps up the No. 2 spot in the overall Buccaneers of the Week Standings.4. Adam Humphries (Two points)Adam Humphries was another guy who had a fitting end to the season. He had a solid day against the Falcons Chris Conte Jersey , but his performance went under the radar. He caught five of his six targets for 66 yards, averaging 13.2 yards per catch. Week 17 for the 25-year-old worked as a microcosm of his overall season. Considering the numbers for the top two guys on this week’s list, it was easy for Humphries to get lost in the shuffle. In the same way, the fact that he caught 76 passes for 816 yards and five touchdowns this season could be easily forgotten. He had a big year for the Tampa Bay offense, and he capped it with a classic Adam Humphries day.Especially with Jameis Winston officially set to return in 2019, there should be no question about Humphries’ future in Tampa. The former undrafted free agent from Clemson has been an important part of the Buccaneer offense over the last four seasons. He is one of Winston’s top targets. He was No. 2 in targets this season with 105, trailing only Mike Evans. Regardless of who comes in as the team’s new head coach in the coming weeks, Humphries should fit into that person’s scheme. With two points this week, No. 10 secured a top-five finish in the season’s overall standings.3. Jameis Winston (Three points)The Tampa Bay offense had such a strong day against the Falcons that it almost feels wrong for Jameis Winston to only be No. 3 on this list. Usually, the offense goes as he goes. He was at his best on Sunday, clicking with his receivers throughout. The soon-to-be 25-year-old completed 22 of his 35 passes for 345 yards and four touchdowns. He was intercepted once, though it went off the hands of a receiver. It was one of those picks that, even though it goes next to the quarterback’s name in the box score, felt like it was more of the receiver’s fault/just a good play by the defender. Despite the one turnover, Winston was on fire early on and especially down the stretch. In no way was he to blame for Tampa Bay’s 11th loss. The Jameis Winston that the Bucs got over the final stretch of the season is the one they’re going to need in 2019 if a turnaround is to happen. Upon his return from being benched, Winston threw for 13 touchdowns to four interceptions in 6 about 1鈦? games. Numbers aside, the Florida State alum played smarter football overall. He took sacks when he had to and threw the ball away when necessary in addition to making smarter throws instead of going for the big play every time. This offseason will be huge for No. 3, as he has one more year to prove that he deserves a second contract with the team. With three points in the final game of his up-and-down season, Winston got himself tied for a top-three finish in the overall standings.2. Chris Godwin (Four points)Chris Godwin has made it more than clear that the Bucs will be just fine without DeSean Jackson. The second-year pro put together the best game of his career, catching six passes for a team-high 114 yards and two touchdowns. His 114 yards were also a career-high, surpassing the 111-yard performance he had against the Saints to close out the 2017 season. Godwin averaged 19 yards per catch against the Falcons John Lynch Jersey , making some big-time grabs. His first touchdown was a 30-yarder at the end of the first half that put the Bucs up 17-0, while his second score came late in the fourth quarter to give the Bucs a 32-31 lead.2018 proved to be a huge year for the Penn State product. Overall, he caught 59 passes for 842 yards and seven touchdowns. He finished as the team’s second-leading receiver Mike Evans, who is a top-five receiver in his own right. He had some bumps in the road late in the year, but Godwin’s second season in the NFL further proved what a steal he was in the third round of the 2017 draft. He has a bright future as Tampa Bay’s No. 2 guy, that’s for sure. With four points this week, he pulls into a tie with Jackson for the No. 6 spot in the overall season standings.1. Mike Evans (Five points)While he may have had eight fewer yards than Chris Godwin, Mike Evans undoubtedly earned the top spot in this week’s standings. The Buccaneer captain caught six passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns while making history in the process. With his first catch of the day, he broke Mark Carrier’s franchise record for receiving yards in a season. He also broke the 6,000-yard mark for his career, becoming the fastest player in NFL history to do so. Plus, the combination of his and Godwin’s performances made for a franchise first— the first time the Bucs have ever had two receivers go over 100 yards and score two touchdowns in the same game.Evans making history may feel normal by now, but what he has done in his first five years with Tampa Bay has been nothing short of remarkable. Through five seasons, he already holds franchise records for career receiving yards, career touchdown catches, single-season receiving yards and touchdown catches in a season. He isn’t far off from the career receptions record, as he needs just 36 more to break James Wilder’s record of 430. Evans has all of this under his belt at the age of 25. That truly is impressive. With another week of earning five full points in the Buccaneers of the Week Standings, he unsurprisingly earns the top spot for the overall season standings.FINAL Buccaneers of the Week Standings for 2018Mike Evans— 35 pointsJason Pierre-Paul— 28 points(TIE) Lavonte David/Peyton Barber/Jameis Winston— 20 points(TIE) Ryan Fitzpatrick/Carl Nassib— 17 pointsAdam Humphries— 13 points(TIE) Chris Godwin/DeSean Jackson— 11 pointsVita Vea— 9 pointsO.J. Texans fans, sign up HERE to join FanPulse. The last time we did this Texans’ fans had a confidence rating of 56% regarding their team. Houston had just blown a first round bye, won the division and was all set to go down 21-0 to the Indianapolis Colts, at home, in the NFL Wildcard round. Since then the team has done things. Immediately they released Demarius Thomas and Kevin Johnson. They kept Seantrel Henderson, Angelo Blackson Natrell Jamerson Jersey , DeAndre Carter, Joel Heath, Brandon Dunn, Brennan Scarlett, Joe Webb and Kai’imi Fairbairn around. They lost Christian Covington, Kareem Jackson, and Tyrann Mathieu to free agency. And they added Matt Kalil, Tashaun Gipson Sammie Coates Jersey , Briean Boddy-Calhoun, Bradley Roby, Darren Fells, and A.J. McCarron. The majority of these moves were one-year deals to cure itches the team had on its roster. Despite having Deshaun Watson on a rookie contract and tons of cap space, the team is pretty much the same right now, slightly different, slightly better, reshuffling the deck a bit. No one is happy. The confidence has dropped from 56% to 26% after free agency Aaron Colvin Jersey , and 54% think the team has improved during free agency. How are you feeling after free agency? The Texans have parted ways with their 2015 first round pick."According to Ian Rapoport Womens Andre Hal Jersey , the Texans have released cornerback Kevin Johnson.Johnson, the Texans’ first-round draft pick in 2015, played in just one game for the Texans last season before heading to injured reserve with a concussion. In his four NFL seasons, Johnson’s Texans career was headlined by injuries Womens Kareem Jackson Jersey , most notably concussions. After playing in all 16 games in his rookie season, Johnson missed 29 of a possible 48 games from 2016-2018.The Texans picked up the fifth-year option on Johnson’s rookie contract before last season, hoping he would rebound and showcase the potential he displayed in his rookie season.Unfortunately for both parties, it never materialized. In recent days http://www.thetexanslockerroom.com/authentic-stephen-anderson-jersey , the Texans sought trade partners for Johnson, but his release today shows that they were unsuccessful in finding a team that was willing to part with an asset to acquire the former Wake Forest star.Johnson, 26, would have made $9.069 million in 2019 had he made the 53-man roster Womens Natrell Jamerson Jersey , a price the Texans evidently felt was not worth his value.Johnson’s release heightens the urgency for the Texans to sign and draft additional cornerbacks this offseason.Pre-Game Recon: Five Questions With Pats Pulpit For some of us, the summer is used as valuable time to get sunburned and forget about everything winter-related. I did that this summer and basically didn’t pay attention to the NFL for a couple of months (which was a blessing, considering how stupid the NFL’s summers can be).The curse of this strategy is that you aren’t fully up to speed with the other other teams. With the season starting, it’s time to start getting to know folks and teams again. I reached out to Rich Hill of the excellent Patriots site Pats Pulpit for a quick Q&A about how the Patriots’ offseason went Nick Martin Jersey White , how their offensive line looks, and how they shape up against the Texans this Sunday. BRB: Julien Edelman’s absence for the first four games of the season would usually be a bad thing for most teams, but the Patriots seem to have a way of finding gems and getting the most out of the position without the flashiest of names. With Edelman gone, who do do you see stepping up to help fill that void?BRB: The Patriots lost starting left tackle Nate Solder to free agency this offseason DeAndre Hopkins Jersey , and then lost potential replacement rookie Isaiah Wynn to injury. How is the offensive line looking heading into the first game of the regular season?BRB: The Patriots lost defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to the Lions this offseason and replaced him with Matt Flores (though not officially). What exactly is going on with the Patriots’ DC position? What will the Patriots’ defense look like schematically out of the gate?BRB:Looking at the Texans from the other side, what is one aspect of the game you think they have an advantage over the Patriots? What’s one area that you think the Patriots will have an edge over the Texans on Sunday?BRB: What’s a better piece of American fiction: “The TB12 Method” or “The Sound and The Fury”?I want to thank Rich for being such a good sport. If you or your loved ones suddenly feel compelled to start following the New England Patriots, I would heartily recommend you float on over to Pats Pulpit to enjoy their excellent coverage and analysis.
The four-year starter at Boston College would be worth a look if he’s available at the top of the second round."It is generally agreed on that the Buccaneers should be targeting a defensive player in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft. The team should perhaps be looking defense with its first few picks http://www.buccaneerslockerroom.com/authentic-mike-alstott-jersey , but offensive line might also be a legitimate need — especially looking beyond this year. So, where would Tampa Bay look to potentially address that?If one of the better interior offensive lineman prospects is available at the top of the second round, might the Bucs be interested? One such prospect is Boston College lineman Chris Lindstrom, who is someone with a late first or early second-round grade. As our 40 Prospects in 40 Days series continues, we take a look at Lindstrom and whether or not he would be a fit for Tampa Bay. Chris Lindstrom’s CareerLindstrom was an all-state player in Massachusetts as a high school senior in 2014 before heading to Boston College for his collegiate career. As a freshman in 2015, he started nine of the team’s 12 games. All nine starts came at right guard, which led into 2016, when he started all 13 games at the position for the Eagles. He then played most of his junior year at right tackle, earning All-ACC second-team honors. According to his Boston College profile,he was the highest-graded lineman on the team in 2017. Lindstrom was then back at right guard for his senior season in 2018, continuing to impress and build up his draft stock. Before the season, he was named to the ACC Preseason Team, received Preseason All-American honors from Athlon Sports and was included in the Outland Trophy Watch List. After the year, he was a selection to the All-ACC first team. ProsLindstrom’s athleticism is his top quality, as he has a rare quickness and ability to move laterally. His performance at the combine showcased that and placed him above a lot of the players at his position in terms of athletic ability. His 4.91-second 40-yard dash, 4.54-second 20-yard shuttle and 117-inch broad jump placed him in the upper level of interior offensive linemen in this year’s class. With such quickness and athleticism, he should be able to match up well with the speed he’ll see at the professional level. He isn’t all that big, but his ability should help compensate for that.Lindstrom’s NFL.com draft profile notes that he has both the athleticism and mental makeup to play center. Not only that, but he obviously has plenty of starting experience at guard and tackle. Such versatility will serve him well no matter where he ends up. ConsThe biggest downside for Lindstrom is probably his size, which is wild considering he stands at 6-foot-4 and weighs in at 308 pounds. That’s not exactly a small dude. His profile on NFL.com says he “lacks the length Chris Conte Jersey , mass and strength some teams will want.” It’s evident in the spider graph above that his measurables are signficantly lower than those of his counterparts in the class.Because of the relative lack of size, Lindstrom could struggle against some of the bigger defensive linemen he’ll see in the league. His “weaknesses” in Lance Zierlein’s analysis have a lot to do with size and strength — or lack thereof. According to that analysis, Lindstrom is “high-hipped and thin below the knees,” has “short arms and lacks traits for consistent block finishes” and “lacks upper-body strength to press and extend defenders out of his frame.” As mentioned earlier, though, his athleticism is able to make up for what he lacks in size and strength. Kyle Crabbs of The Draft Network praised Lindstrom’s power at the point of attack, saying this: That sounds like a guy who knows how to be successful by playing to his strengths and masking his weaknesses. Why The Buccaneers Need HimTampa Bay’s offensive line is far from set — in 2019 and even further beyond. The left side is set for this year and a number of years to come, with Donovan Smith at left tackle and Ali Marpet at left guard. The rest of the line isn’t as solidified. With a $10 million cap hit in 2019, Ryan Jensen is locked in at center. On the right side, Alex Cappa and veteran Earl Watford are battling for the right guard spot. Demar Dotson will more than likely still be the right tackle, but he has to be nearing the end of his career. Overall, the right side is a question mark. So, looking at this year, Lindstrom would probably figure in as a threat to win the right guard job. His experience at tackle makes him a potential backup to Dotson, but he’s better-suited for an interior spot. Where things might get interesting, then, is in 2020. Should the Bucs like Lindstrom enough to draft him, he could play right guard this year and possibly shift to center in 2020, when the team has a potential out in Jensen’s contract. Getting a guy like Lindstrom to lock in on the interior of the line — whether it’s at guard or center — for years to come wouldn’t be a bad idea for Tampa Bay.Will It Happen? It’s probably unlikely, though it’s not worth throwing out completely. It just depends on how front offices view him Shaquil Barrett Jersey , as well as how needs are around the league. The Draft Network’s Benjamin Solak ranks Lindstrom as the No. 2 interior offensive lineman in the draft, though interior guys don’t always get picked at a high rate. Here’s where Lindstrom is going in some of the most recent mock drafts:The Draft Network (Brad Kelly 4.0): Round 1, Pick 31 (31st overall) — Los Angeles RamsCBS Sports (R.J. White): Round 2, Pick 10 (42nd overall) — Philadelphia EaglesNFL.com (Chad Reuter): Round 1, Pick 18 (18th overall) — Minnesota VikingsWalter Football: Round 1, Pick 25 25th overall) — Philadelphia EaglesLindstrom could be going late in the first round. If that’s the case, the Bucs obviously would be out on him unless they somehow traded very far down in round one or traded back in. The more legitimate shot is in the second round. Tampa Bay’s second pick is No. 39 overall, so if he slipped to that point, it might be a realistic choice for Jason Licht and his staff. The 2019 Buccaneers are going a Cardinals flair to them as head coach Bruce Arians has filled out the staff with assistants who worked for him when he was in Arizona from 2013 to 2017.Among those coaches is Todd Bowles, who was the defensive coordinator in Arians’ first two seasons with the Cardinals and will be running the defense in Tampa. One of the players he’ll be coaching is linebacker Deone Bucannon and that furthers the connection to the Arizona days.Bucannon was Arizona’s first-round pick in 2014 and signed a one-year deal with the Buccaneers last week. He said on SiriusXM NFL Radio that he immediately knew Tampa was the right place for him and that playing for Bowles again was a big reason why he feels that way.“Honestly, it just gives me space … it allows me to play fast and it allows me to hit hard, and those are my two strengths within the defense,” Bucannon said. “And I feel like how Coach Bowles coaches the game, how each and every person individually, he puts them in a position to win. He puts them in the best position, according to the player.”Bucannon’s playing time dropped significantly with the Cardinals last season after a change in defensive scheme. If returning to the familiar leads to better results for Bucannon, he may be in line for a longer deal around this time next year.
