SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (6-10)

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS: RB Carlos Hyde; Ss Eric Reid and Antone Exum Duke Johnson Jersey , DE Aaron Lynch; DLs Chris Jones, Tank Carradine and Leger Douzable; LB Brock Coyle; G Brandon Fusco; CBs Leon Hall, Dontae Johnson, and Asa Jackson; WR Louis Murphy; TE Logan Paulsen; C Tim Barnes.

RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS: None.

NEEDS: 49ers answered biggest question last month when they signed quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to $137.5 million contract after he led them to five straight wins following midseason trade with New England. Then San Francisco got a head start on free agency by signing former nemesis Richard Sherman to upgrade at cornerback following his release from Seattle. The task this spring will be to get Garoppolo help and improve the pass rush on defense. San Francisco could use big target at either receiver or tight end to help in red zone, as well as improvement on interior of offensive line. Biggest question on offense comes at running back where San Francisco must decide whether to try to re-sign Hyde or look for someone else as lead back.

AVAILABLE SALARY CAP SPACE (approximately): $64 million.

Kelvin Benjamin burst up the right sideline, timed his turn some 20 yards upfield, and made a leaping catch by using his imposing 6-foot-5 frame to box-out cornerback Tre'Davious White on the opening day of the Bills' mandatory minicamp.

It wasn't so much the catch that thrilled Benjamin. It was, more so, how effortlessly he leaped now that his two once-wobbly knees are feeling better.

"I'm so happy to have both knees working for me at the same time," Benjamin said Wednesday.

"Last season Jacob McQuaide Jersey , that catch, even trying to jump up and get that, I would have had to put so much effort just to jump. I mean, I did it with ease. It was just like second nature to me."

That's encouraging for Benjamin, who had offseason surgery to repair torn ligaments in his right knee. Benjamin also played through a sore left knee, which he strained while still playing for Carolina, before being traded to Buffalo on Oct. 31.

The 27-year-old is attempting to re-establish himself as one of the league's more productive receivers following a mostly forgettable season in which injuries and the trade stunted his production.

Benjamin finished with 48 catches for 692 yards and three touchdowns, all career lows since being selected by Carolina with the 28th pick in the 2014 draft.

Benjamin is eager to put last year behind, by saying, "You've got to have a short memory Calais Campbell Jersey , you know what I'm saying, forget about it and move on."

It helps being healthy, and Benjamin having an entire offseason to familiarize himself with Buffalo and new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll .

Just as important, Benjamin believes he's in a better place entering the final year of his contract after getting the sense he no longer fit the Panthers' long-term plans.

Benjamin revealed he prompted the Panthers to trade him.

"I didn't want to be there no more, nah," he said. "I just felt like they weren't featuring me more. I was their No. 1, but I wasn't getting my No. 1 targets."

Benjamin had just 32 catches on 51 targets in eight games with the Panthers last season. That was a sharp decline from his rookie season, when he was targeted 145 times, and finished with 73 catches for 1,008 yards and nine touchdowns.

Bills general manager Brandon Beane gave up third- and seventh-round draft picks to acquire Benjamin Emmanuel Ogbah Jersey , and acknowledged having inside information on the receiver being available. Beane previously served as the Panthers assistant GM and had a hand in drafting Benjamin.

"I didn't think it was a what you'd call a perfect marriage at the time for various reasons, and probably looking at a lot of avenues for blame," Beane said of Benjamin's falling out in Carolina.

"I know when he's healthy what he can do. And you can't coach size and length that he has. And that's a weapon to defend."

In Buffalo, Benjamin is expected to be a fixture on a revamped offense lacking proven depth behind him at receiver.

He also benefits from playing under coach Sean McDermott, who has firsthand knowledge of the threat Benjamin can present after previously serving as the Panthers defensive coordinator.

"It's a matchup concern for defenses, it's a matchup concern for defensive coordinators, and one we need to use wisely," McDermott said.

The Bills' passing attack ranked no better than 22nd in three seasons under Tyrod Taylor, who was traded to Cleveland this offseason. Buffalo hasn't cracked the top 10 of the NFL in yard passing since finishing fifth in 2002 during Drew Bledsoe's first season.

Rookie first-round pick Josh Allen, free-agent addition AJ McCarron and second-year backup Nathan Peterman are competing for the starting job.

Benjamin is eager to show he hasn't lost a step Mike Adams Jersey , while knowing he has something to prove when it comes to making a case for his next contract.

"I feel like it's going to come. You ain't got to sit there and beg for it," Benjamin said. "Money, the money, it's going to come."

NOTES: Allen ended the final day of mandatory practices on Thursday by hitting fellow rookie WR Austin Proehl on a deep touchdown pass on their first play from scrimmage. ... The Bills are off until opening training camp in suburban Rochester, New York, on July 26.

Zhaire Smith Jersey
Ready or not Niles Paul Jersey , the Cleveland Browns are getting their close-up.

Coming off a historic, dismal 0-16 season, the Browns have been chosen to appear on HBO’s popular ”Hard Knocks” series that gives NFL fans a behind-the-scenes look at training camp.

The Browns have turned down previous opportunities to be on the award-winning series. But with renewed optimism around Cleveland following the recent draft, and the selection of quarterback Baker Mayfield, the team is granting HBO unlimited access to its upcoming camp.

Cleveland is the 13th franchise to participate in ”Hard Knocks,” which began in 2001 with the Baltimore Ravens. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were featured last summer.

Although they’ve won only one game the past two seasons under coach Hue Jackson, the Browns see the show as a possibility to highlight some of their younger players and put a positive spin on their rebuild.

And for HBO, Mayfield’s quest to win the starting job is just one of several juicy story lines.

”NFL Films has always been exceptional at bringing fans closer to the game and they do an outstanding job with every show they produce, including HBO’s Hard Knocks,” Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam said. ”We have been asked multiple times about being featured on Hard Knocks, and we really felt like it was our turn this year and the timing was right. We want to be great partners in this league, and we also recognize Hard Knocks gives fans a special opportunity to learn more about our team and players.”

HBO’s cameras are certain to focus on Mayfield Kyle Fuller Jersey , the brash Heisman Trophy winner from Oklahoma the Browns chose over other quarterbacks. Mayfield is expected to back up Tyrod Taylor this season, but their competition could make for the kind compelling TV that has made the series a must-watch for football junkies.

A 30-person film crew will be at the team’s training facility in Berea to record more than 2,000 hours of footage for the five-segment series that will debut Aug. 7.

The Browns have some good young players who are not well known outside Cleveland. But ”Hard Knocks” will give national exposure to budding stars like defensive end Myles Garrett, Mayfield and safety Jabrill Peppers and give the network a chance to tell the well-documented story of former Pro Bowl wide receiver Josh Gordon, who has missed most of the past three seasons because of drug suspensions.

Mayfield has experience in front of the cameras. He was recently featured in a recent documentary series as he prepared for the draft, and feels the Browns can make ”Hard Knocks” a positive experience.

”For me looking at it, and us as a team, I’d say it can be good if you handle it right. I’ll just say that,” he said on SiriusXM NFL Radio. ”If you think about it as a way to get on camera and try to show off and do certain things and handle it the wrong way then that can be very negative, it can be a distraction. But if you use it as a sense of, `OK, I got to block out everything else and just focus on playing ball Tom Jackson Jersey ,’ then that can be a great thing for us.”

Jackson and Browns defensive coordinator Gregg Williams have both been on ”Hard Knocks” – Jackson with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2013 and Williams with the Los Angeles Rams in 2016.

”Being able to bring our fans in so they can get to know our players and our organization in a different way will be a huge positive for us,” Jackson said. ”I want people to see how much our players and coaches care, how hard they work and how badly they want to win for Cleveland. This will be a great opportunity for our team.”

Browns general manager John Dorsey had reservations about the series, but feels the team is equipped to handle the added scrutiny.

”Once we sat down and talked about it as an organization, I feel a lot better and understand why the time is right,” said Dorsey, who has been overhauling the team since being hired in December. ”Hue and I both feel like this team is in a good place and that we are in the process of building something that will lead to success.”

Something about the big moments brings out the best in Mitch Haniger.

His two-run home run in the ninth on Wednesday, after a stellar defensive play in the top of the inning, gave the Seattle Mariners an 8-6 victory and sweep of the three-game series over the Los Angeles Angels.

”We have such a powerful lineup,” Haniger said. ”On any given night it can be somebody else and that’s kind of the vibe. There’s no panic.”

Haniger, who has 16 home runs this season and 52 RBIs, has an MLB-best 11 game-winning hits – including his second game-ending homer on Wednesday.

After Jean Segura singled to center off reliever Oliver Drake (0-1) Jacob McQuaide Jersey , Haniger sent a pitch over the left-field wall off to end it.

Nelson Cruz and Ryon Healy also homered for Seattle, and Healy’s upper-deck shot in the eighth inning tied the game at 6-6. Cruz hit a two-run homer in the second inning, his fourth in his last five games and 16th of the season.

The home run by Haniger, who was 2-for-5 and scored two runs, was his second big play of the ninth inning. He also made an outstanding defensive play in right field for the second consecutive game.

With one out and a runner at first, Martin Maldonado hit fly ball to deep right that was tailing away from Haniger. However, he raced to make the catch before throwing it on the fly to Healy in the infield. Healy ran to first to double off Jabari Blash, who was pinch running for Albert Pujols.

The Mariners have won six of their last seven games and 11 of their last 13. Roenis Elias (2-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief, and Seattle starter Marco Gonzales allowed seven hits and three runs in five innings.

Wednesday’s game had plenty of drama – including two times when the game was tied and two lead changes.

”I don’t know where to start with this game,” said Seattle manager Scott Servais. ”It had a little bit of everything in it.”

Seattle built a 4-1 lead in the third inning and led 4-3 before the Angels came back to tie it in sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Luis Valbuena. Home runs by Nolan Fontana and Chris Young gave the Angels a 6-4 lead in the seventh.

The Angels had won six consecutive games before coming to Seattle.

”It says a lot the way our guys came back,” Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said. ”But unfortunately it was one of those days when our bullpen was stretched a bit after having to use them a lot, and we couldn’t get it done at the end.”

INJURED ANGELS

Angels starting pitcher Garrett Richards left the game after two innings because of tightness in his left hamstring. Shortstop Zack Cozart left the game in the fourth inning because of a left shoulder strain.

SEAGER SCRATCHED

Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager was a late scratch from the starting lineup Wednesday Jarius Wright Jersey , but he is not injured. Mariners officials said it was a personal issue, and Andrew Romine started at third in his place.

SERVAIS’ NEW LOOK

Before the season started, Servais said he would get a haircut just like Edwin Diaz if the closer reached 50 saves this season. Diaz, who has a Z-like symbol shaved into the left side of his head, already has an MLB-best 25 saves this season and is on pace to reach 55 saves. ”I’m aware,” Servais said. ”I’m already talking to barbers. I’m OK with that.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Angels: OF Kole Calhoun (oblique strain) started a rehab assignment at Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday.

Mariners: RHP Nick Vincent (groin strain) and RHP Juan Nicasio (knee swelling) both are expected to throw in the bullpen Friday on Saturday. Servais said he hopes both relievers can come of the 10-day DL by the middle up the upcoming 10-day road trip that starts in New York against the Yankees on June 19.

UP NEXT

Angels: LHP Tyler Skaggs (5-4, 3.08) tries to continue his June hot streak when the Angels play the Athletics on Friday in Oakland. Skaggs is 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in his previous two starts this month. Trevor Cahill (1-2, 2.27) is expected to start for Oakland.

Mariners: Felix Hernandez (6-5, 5.70) is on the mound to start a four-game home series against the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. Hernandez is coming off his shortest outing of the season when he took the loss at Tampa Bay, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in the 7-3 loss. David Price (7-4, 4.00) is the expected starter for Boston.

Chandler Catanzaro‘s first game as the Buccaneers kicker could have gone better.

Catanzaro missed a field goal and an extra point against the Dolphins last week. That’s not what the team was looking for when they signed Catanzaro to a three-year deal this offseason after running through several kickers over the last two years Josh Shaw Jersey , but the veteran says things will work out.

Catanzaro said he knows what went wrong on last week’s kicks and has “already moved forward.”

“It’s taken some experience and it’s controlling what I could control, which is the next kick Nolan Cromwell Jersey ,” Catanzaro said, via Jenna Laine of ESPN.com. “I can’t control what people are saying about me John Kelly Jersey , what’s going on outside of the circumstance — all I can control is my foot on the ball. It’s me and the ball out there. I’m gonna make a lot of kicks. I’m gonna be fine.”

Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter said he feels fine about Catanzaro. The team looked at some other kickers last week, but those workouts were scheduled before Catanzaro’s missed kicks as the Bucs were looking for someone to potential save some wear on Catanzaro’s leg as the season gets closer.

The NHL is moving up its All-Star skills competition and game next season.

After years of holding the skills competition on Saturday night and the All-Star Game on Sunday Mike Singletary Jersey , the NHL is moving each event up a day for the 2019 weekend hosted by the San Jose Sharks. The skills competition will take place on Friday, Jan. 25 and the game on Saturday Shaq Lawson Jersey , Jan. 26 at SAP Center.

The league announced the change Monday.

It’s uncertain if the All-Star Game will still take the form of a 3-on-3 tournament as it has the past two years. The 3-on-3 tournament was negotiated beginning in 2017 for five-day bye weeks for each team.

San Jose is hosting NHL All-Star Weekend for the first time since 1997.

Following another strong start from Shane Bieber Shane Lechler Jersey , Indians closer Cody Allen managed to hit the brakes just in time during yet another tense ninth inning.

Allen overcame Giancarlo Stanton’s leadoff homer in the ninth and retired pinch-hitter Didi Gregorius with the tying run on first to close out Cleveland’s 6-5 win over the New York Yankees on Friday night.

Allen, making his first appearance since allowing a career-high six runs in the ninth inning against Cincinnati on Tuesday, recorded his 19th save in 20 chances. The right-hander tried to use that experience as a positive this time.

”What’s the old saying, experience comes from failure,” Allen said. ”You kind of have to go back and try to learn from all those moments and use them going forward.”

Greg Bird singled after Stanton’s homer, but Allen got Miguel Andujar to bounce into a double play. Allen walked Neil Walker Chaz Green Jersey , but Gregorius popped up to shortstop Francisco Lindor in shallow left field.

Allen has tried to put his performance against Cincinnati behind him.

”Sometimes it’s a little harder than others, but you really don’t have a choice,” he said. ”Obviously the leadoff homer and that base hit there, you start to sometimes maybe allow it to speed up a little bit. You have to do your best to try and reel it in.”

Rookie right-hander Shane Bieber (5-1) pitched into the eighth inning. He was removed after Tyler Wade’s leadoff double and Cleveland leading 6-3. Brett Gardner’s RBI groundout cut the lead to two and set up the ninth.

Jose Ramirez, the starting third baseman for the AL in the All-Star Game, drove in two runs with a groundout in the first and a triple in the fifth. Michael Brantley Patrick DiMarco Jersey , also an All-Star, hit a two-run double in the second.

The Indians broke a seven-game losing streak against the Yankees dating to last season’s AL Division Series when New York came back from a 2-0 deficit. The Yankees won the first four games between the teams this season.

Yankees rookie Domingo German (2-5) allowed six runs – matching a season high – in four-plus innings.

Bieber allowed four runs – three earned – in seven-plus innings. The right-hander was making his seventh major league start.

Neil Ramirez replaced Perez in the eighth and hit Aaron Judge with a 1-2 pitch, but struck out Aaron Hicks. Judge ran on the pitch and was called safe at second, but the call was overturned after a review. Stanton homered in the next at-bat leading off the ninth.

”Especially when Stanton comes up the next inning and hits a home run like that, it’s tough,” Judge said. ”But those are gambles. You’ve got to take those gambles. We took a risk and I was out.”

Ramirez’s groundout scored a run in the first and Cleveland added three in the second. Yan Gomes doubled in a run before Brantley added a two-run double.

New York got back in the game in the fifth on Walker’s RBI double and Gardner’s sacrifice fly Jourdan Lewis Jersey , with a wild pitch scoring another run.

Ramirez’s RBI triple and Yonder Alonso’s run-scoring single in the bottom of the inning pushed the lead to 6-3.

Bieber has a 3.74 ERA in seven starts with Cleveland after beginning the season at Double-A Akron.

TOUGH OUTING

Yankees manager Aaron Boone had a simple explanation for German’s struggles.

”Just couldn’t find his fastball there the first couple innings,” Boone said. ”To his credit, he kind of righted the ship a little bit and got into a little bit of a rhythm because we were real close to probably having to get him out of there in the second inning.”

ON THE MOVE

Left-hander Ryan Merritt, who hasn’t pitched in the majors this season because of knee and shoulder injuries, was activated from the 60-day disabled list and designated for assignment by the Indians. Merritt started the series-clinching Game 5 of the 2016 ALCS against Toronto when Cleveland went to the World Series.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Yankees: C Gary Sanchez (strained right groin) ran the bases Friday and could begin a minor league rehab assignment Sunday at Triple-A Scranton. He’s been out since June 25.

Indians: LHP Andrew Miller (right knee inflammation) will throw to hitters Saturday at Double-A Akron and will likely begin a rehab assignment next week. He’s been on the disabled list since May 26.

UP NEXT

Yankees LHP CC Sabathia (6-4, 3.34 ERA) will make his 527th career start Saturday Tramaine Brock Jersey , tying him with Jerry Koosman and Jack Morris for 36th on the career list. RHP Mike Clevinger (7-4, 3.34) allowed two runs in 7 1/3 innings at Yankee Stadium on May 6 in a no-decision.

The Bills had two of their three quarterbacks get medical attention during Sunday’s practice.

AJ McCarron was the first to need the training staff. They checked out his right leg and a team spokesman said that someone had stepped on it during the session. Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News reports McCarron was walking gingerly and favoring the leg, but the quarterback said he was OK.

“I’m fine, I’m fine,” McCarron said.

Nathan Peterman had his right shoulder checked out after falling on it during what Carucci reports would have been his final rep of the day. Neither he nor the team had any update on his condition.

Peterman started last Thursday’s preseason game and has split the majority of the first team work with McCarron this summer.

Jalen Brunson Jersey
Ha Ha Clinton-Dix returned to Lambeau Field for Green Bay Packers minicamp after the safety cited personal issues for missing some voluntary offseason workouts.

Clinton-Dix said that the death of his godmother following a heart attack hit him hard. She was a school principal who played a formative role in Clinton-Dix's upbringing.

"I learned everything. I learned the principles of being a young man Thurman Thomas Jersey , not taking anything for granted," he said.

Having the opportunity to spend time with family meant a lot to him.

"But, you know, my family means everything to me," Clinton-Dix said after practice Tuesday. "If I have the opportunity to be home with them, I would love to be home with them."

The safety's absence during some voluntary workouts in May and early June was notable given that the Packers have a new defensive coordinator, Mike Pettine. A Pro Bowler in 2016, Clinton-Dix is part of the core of a defense hoping to improve following a lackluster 2017 season.

He's also entering the option year of the rookie contract signed after being drafted in the first round in 2014 out of Alabama.

Asked why he missed some of the workouts, Clinton-Dix first said "family issues," then winked .

Asked if his absence wasn't contract related Case Keenum Jersey , the fifth-year pro replied "personal issues."

Later, Clinton-Dix said he had no deadline to get a new deal done. He doesn't sound like someone who plans to hold out, either.

"What would it do, though?" Clinton-Dix said. "You're just wasting your time, really. You're getting fined and fined and fined. I'm a guy that, I need my money, man. That's why I'm here now. I need my money."

Clinton-Dix was in Green Bay for three weeks at the start of the offseason program in April. He had his team-issued tablet computer the entire time while he was away to watch practices.

If there were any questions, Clinton-Dix would contact position coach Joe Whitt. A member of the coaching staff would get back to him with an answer, or send another video clip to help.

"Well, you guys can take attendance. It's a mandatory minicamp Kony Ealy Jersey , so things step up. But I feel really good, Ha Ha all the way through," coach Mike McCarthy said. "We've had change, we've transitioned through that."

McCarthy followed recent tradition and excused 16 veterans with six or more years of experience from this week's minicamp, including quarterback Aaron Rodgers. So practices this week can especially help rookies or younger players lower on the depth chart make impressions on the coaching staff.

Still, any time on the practice field with a player with Pro Bowl potential such as Clinton-Dix can help as the Packers hope to finish the offseason program strong before going on summer break.

"Scheme or not, all you've got to do is (say) 'You've got this, you've got this' and he's going to go out there and play," second-year cornerback Kevin King said. "Playbook-wise, I'm not worried about that. Ha Ha is going to be Ha Ha."

Always confident Donte Moncrief Jersey , Clinton-Dix used word play when asked if minicamp was a time when he could play catch-up. Pettine's scheme appears to play to Clinton-Dix's strength and allow him to spend more time closer to the line of scrimmage, rather than 20 yards out.

"I love ketchup. Love it on my hot dogs, love it on my hamburgers and I love it on my fries," Clinton-Dix said. "Catch-up won't be a problem."

Rockets star Chris Paul is among many in the Houston sports world offering condolences to the families affected by an area school shooting that left 10 people dead.

Paul says: ”It’s tough, man. It’s scary that that’s become the norm here. We’ve got to do something about it.”

The shooting in Santa Fe, which is about 30 miles from downtown Houston, comes after 17 people were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in February.

Houston Astros manager A.J. Hinch, who has two school-aged daughters and was with the Astros at training camp in Florida at the time of the Marjory Stoneman shooting Jim Brown Jersey , expressed anger that these shootings continue to occur.

He says: ”It’s heartbreaking, another senseless act of violence in our schools. We’ll copy/paste this answer for the next time something happens because we feel like there’s something happening on a routine basis that’s idiotic and terrible and miserable. I hope we can somehow find a way to get past it for one, offer our condolences to the people affected and more importantly figure out a way to stop this madness.”

The Astros issued a statement Friday offering prayers to those affected by the shooting. They added that they’d hold a moment of silence in their honor before Friday night’s game against Cleveland and that the Texas flags at Minute Maid Park would be flown at half-staff.

Astros pitcher Lance McCullers, who said he is working on a plan to help a student who was among the 10 people wounded in the attack, says something has to change to stop this from happening again.

He says: ”I just feel like there’s got to be some sort of solution. My heart goes out to the families and the kids who shouldn’t even have to worry about something like that.”

The Houston Texans also issued a statement sending condolences to the victims and thanking first responders and law enforcement who helped in the wake of the attack.

Josh Okogie Jersey
Tavon Austin never really had a fresh start with a new coach in Los Angeles because of a wrist injury that plagued him and a hamstring that popped before the last of five disappointing seasons with the Rams.

The eighth overall pick in the 2013 draft believes the opportunity has arrived through a trade to the Dallas Cowboys and the health that Austin hoped would come with it. Having something to prove is nothing new for the 5-foot-8 hybrid receiver/returner/runner.

"There's always going to be a chip on my shoulder Chipper Jones Jersey , No. 1 because I've always been small," Austin said. "I had the same thing coming out, when I went No. 8. So the chip's always going to be there regardless. But last year was a little hard, my injury and I didn't get a fair chance over there."

At first, Austin really didn't know what to make of the draft-day deal that sent a sixth-round pick to LA. He had largely been a spectator when the Rams ended a 12-year playoff drought in the first season under offensive-minded coach Sean McVay.

Austin's first conversation with owner Jerry Jones boosted his spirits, and he later told reporters he was close to a recovery from ligament damage in his left wrist. He hasn't missed a day at training camp as part of a revamped group of targets for quarterback Dak Prescott.

While he played in all 16 games for the NFC West champions with nine starts, Austin had just 13 catches for 47 yards. Most of his work was as a runner (59 carries, 270 yards and his only touchdown). Most of his time was spent on the bench.

"Last year was the first time I had hit rock bottom dealing with an injury and the media bashing me saying I couldn't do it," said Austin http://www.buffalobillsteamonline.com/lesean-mccoy-jersey , who had 1,689 yards and 12 touchdowns receiving and 1,238 yards and nine TDs rushing with the Rams, who were in St. Louis when they drafted him.

"But I stayed true to myself and I knew what happened to me. I wasn't a person to cry or point fingers or find any sympathy. If I went out there, I went out there. I thought I was ready, so that's what it was."

Austin tries to stay out of the spotlight after practices at camp, only occasionally stopping for interviews. The 28-year-old is soft-spoken and reserved, but quick with a smile once he gets to talking.

The Cowboys signed a pair of free agents in Allen Hurns and Deonte Thompson, dumped franchise touchdown receptions leader Dez Bryant in a cost-cutting move and drafted Michael Gallup in the third round Ed Dickson Jersey Seahawks , a day before the trade for Austin.

The change of scenery offered Austin the rare chance to fill a leadership void despite being new to Dallas. Not only are the Cowboys likely to have four new receivers on the 53-man roster, they have a new coach at the position as well.

"He's that veteran guy that I don't know that I've really had that I can say, 'Hey, get them to do this,'" receivers coach Sanjay Lal said. "Because even in the walkthrough, he's working through his footwork, he's sinking his hips, which is how you build muscle memory. Don't waste these reps."

The way Austin sees it, he didn't get Lal's attention by doing anything unusual.

"I've never been a captain of a team Kirk Gibson Jersey ," Austin said. "But people always listen just because of my work ethic. When I'm out there just talking, I'm having fun and No. 2 just competing. It's just in me. I definitely will take the role on being in leadership."

He'll also take the role of coming out of the backfield 鈥?assuming that happens at some point. With almost as many carries (184) as catches (194) in his career, Austin figures to remain a hybrid back. The Cowboys just haven't shown much of the backfield component in camp.

"You can call him whatever you want to call him," coach Jason Garrett said. "He's obviously very quick. He's very fast. We're comfortable lining him up as a receiver outside or inside and certainly in the backfield as well. He's done all those things."

Now Austin gets to try them with that elusive fresh start.

The Oakland Raiders have agreed to a three-year contract with free agent tight end Derek Carrier.

A person familiar with the deal says the sides agreed on Tuesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because signings can’t become official until the start of the new league year on Wednesday. NFL Network first reported the deal.

Carrier originally signed with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2012 but didn’t make the team. He has played 50 career games over five seasons with San Francisco, Washington and the Rams. Carrier played for Raiders coach Jon Gruden’s brother, Jay, in Washington and his protege, Sean McVay, with the Rams.

Carrier has 36 catches for 327 yards and one TD in his career. He caught eight passes for 71 yards last season.

The Raiders have several major holes they will look to fill in free agency starting this week as they try to rebound from a disappointing six-win season that led to the firing of coach Jack Del Rio and the move to bring Gruden back for a second stint as coach.

The most glaring spots for the Raiders are on defense Customized Oakland Raiders Jerseys , where Oakland will be seeking a starting cornerback to pair with last year’s first-round pick Gareon Conley. They must also decide whether to bring back middle linebacker NaVorro Bowman as a free agent or find a replacement elsewhere, and they need to upgrade the pass rush, especially at defensive tackle.

The Raiders also will likely be in the market for a receiver, a possible replacement for released former starting right tackle Marshall Newhouse, and a running back if they decide not to bring Marshawn Lynch back for a second season.

.

A person familiar with the decision says the New Orleans Saints have released veteran tight end Coby Fleener.

The person spoke to The Associated Press Monday on condition of anonymity because the roster move has not been announced.

Fleener has played two seasons for New Orleans M.J. Stewart Jersey Elite , with whom he signed a five-year, $36 million free-agent contract in 2016 鈥?two seasons after the Saints had traded away star tight end Jimmy Graham.

The 6-foot-6, 251-pound Fleener caught 72 passes for 926 yards and five touchdowns in 27 games with the Saints before his 2017 season was cut short by a Week 12 concussion.

With Fleener's departure, the Saints most accomplished tight ends are Benjamin Watson, Josh Hill and Michael Hoomanawanui.

Fleener began his NFL career in 2012 Indianapolis. In 2014, he was among Colts quarterback Andrew Luck's top targets, with 774 yards and eight touchdowns receiving.

As he begins chasing a championship, Korver is wrestling with the recent death of his younger brother, Kirk http://www.billsauthorizedshops.com/authentic-phillip-gaines-jersey , who died at 27 from complications following a sudden illness.

Following Tuesday’s practice, Korver paused several times while discussing a ”very complicated month” that has changed his life and split him in two. He’s walking an emotional balance beam.

”You come back from dealing with death and the family and you hold that in one hand and you hold the playoffs here in another hand and it’s interesting to kind of balance both of those at the same time and try to get yourself ready to play basketball,” he said. ”And, I’ve been hurt. I feel like it’s been a very complicated month in my mind, but I feel like I’m in a good spot right now and I’m ready to play.”

Korver was on the floor for just four minutes in the 98-80 loss to Indiana in Game 1, but he’s feeling better and expects to have more of an impact as the Cavaliers try to even the series Wednesday night.

The 37-year-old swingman has been comforted by his wife, Juliet, his family and an overwhelming outpouring of support from teammates, opponents and many in the NBA community.

The words and flowers and text messages have brought some peace Colts Nyheim Hines Jersey , but Korver remains conflicted on how to mourn, how to express his grief.

”You know that you don’t cry when you think about your brother? Is that good? I don’t think that’s good,” he said. ”I feel like I’m trying to go through all the emotions and stages and waves that people tell me about. I understand that this is part of life and when you go through something like this, it’s amazing how many people come up to you and talk about their own stories that they’ve had. There have been so many.

”They’re hard and they’re hard to hear, but it’s also very comforting to know that you’re going through this with a lot of people and a lot of people care about you.”

Korver was also warmed by reaction to a video of him speaking at Kirk’s funeral . Flanked by his other brothers, Kyle and Klayton, he looked at his parents and said, ”You will always have four sons.”

”I’m told a lot of people have watched it and it meant something to a lot of people,” Korver said. ”I think if your brother has to die Cheap Jonathan Cooper Jersey , you want something good to come of it. You know, it will take a long time to see the good that comes from that. I don’t really know if I have the head space right now to think about all that.

”It means a lot that people received that all well and commented. I’ve been told it’s been helpful.”

His job hasn’t provided much sanctuary, mainly because Korver has been injured. He hasn’t been able to move the way he normally does, cutting across the baseline or coming off a screen to knock down a 3-pointer.

”Whether it’s good or bad, I just want to play really hard,” he said. ”But I couldn’t, I haven’t been able to just because of it. It’s good to have something now to kind of sink into, just for a little bit of every day kind of get lost in and try harder.”

Korver was starting before he left the team following a March 19 win over Milwaukee to be with his family in Iowa. Coach Tyronn Lue wanted him back with the first group for the playoffs, but couldn’t because of the foot injury so Rodney Hood started Game 1.

It’s possible Korver could start Game 2 Adidas Tyler Seguin Jersey , with Lue considering a lineup change. Lue hinted he used what he thinks is his best lineup only for a brief stretch on Sunday ”when Kyle was out there for three minutes.”

The Cavs need his shooting, and Korver wants to deliver.

There’s another game to play, some time to clear his mind and maybe for some 3-pointers to fall.

”I tried that the other night and I got taken out real quick,” he said with a smile. ”It will be good. Hopefully there will be some opportunity for me tomorrow.”

With the departures of longtime veterans and fan favorites Youth Philadelphia Eagles Jerseys , the Kansas City Chiefs have tried to make their offseason roster turnover about youth, speed and aggressive play – an approach coach Andy Reid underscored Thursday with the official introduction of new arrivals Sammy Watkins and Anthony Hitchens.

”We’re so excited about the future, man, it’s the energy level,” Reid said. ”We’ve got a great nucleus coming back, we’ve added some players that are top notch.”

Second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes headlines that young nucleus. Watkins adds depth to a receiving corps whose players are all 25 or younger.

Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce each topped 1,000 yards receiving last season and Kareem Hunt led the league in rushing as a rookie. Chris Conley and Demarcus Robinson add speed at wideout. The addition of Watkins marks a concerted effort to surround Mahomes with an array of options during his first year as a starting quarterback.

”I just need to put the ball in their hands and they’ll all make the plays,” Mahomes said.

General manager Brett Veach first to acquire Watkins from Buffalo last summer, only to see the Los Angeles Rams outbid him. Watkins hauled in 39 catches for 593 yards and eight touchdowns while bouncing back from a broken bone in his foot that limited him to eight games in 2016.

Veach finally got his man with a three-year, $48 million deal. He said he believes Watkins can blossom in Kansas City with a full offseason program developing chemistry with Mahomes.

”Don’t let the production fool you, when you watch the tape, the guy is open all the time,” Veach said. ”Literally, the guy is open on the time.”

For Watkins, he enters an offseason healthy and happy for the first time in his career.

”I just feel like I’ve got more in my tank,” Watkins said. ”I haven’t been to any minicamp or ever been able to attend any OTAs Carolina Panthers Jerseys Womens , so I feel like I can get a head start and be the best version of myself. Just to do it here is a pleasure because I had an opportunity to come to a team that really wanted me and I really wanted to be here.”

Hitchens comes to Kansas City via Dallas, where he racked up a career-high 84 tackles last season. The Chiefs expect the 25-year-old linebacker to fill the void left by Derrick Johnson, the franchise’s all-time leading tackler.

”That’s a guy I looked up to through college and high school,” Hitchens said of Johnson. ”Him and Ray Lewis were my favorite two guys. To be able to play the same position in the same defense as him is a blessing.”

The Chiefs hope Hitchens paired with 24-year-old linebacker Reggie Ragland can plug a leaky Chiefs run defense that ranked 27th against the run last season.

”They said they wanted more fire power and more hitting and more aggressive,” Hitchens said. ”They said they have some players but that’s what they wanted to be based on.”

Reid also envisions Hitchens as an every-down linebacker.

”Hitch has that ability like D.J. did to get small and has that feel of getting into those tight cracks and making those tackles that you saw D.J. do,” Reid said. ”He’s also a good cover guy.”

The Chiefs will look different in a lot of places next season. Mahomes replaces Alex Smith, who was traded to Washington. Two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Marcus Peters was dealt to the Rams for draft picks and, besides Johnson, the Chiefs also parted ways with Tamba Hali, who ranks second only to Derrick Thomas in career sacks. Safety Ron Parker is gone, too.

Reid, however, is looking forward to his 20th season as head coach.

”We’re fired up about this whole thing,” Reid said. ”You know I’m not great at standing up and saying, `Hey, you know Joc Pederson Jersey , here we go.’ But I’m ready to roll and we’re sitting here in March.”

Trumaine Johnson sees a lot of the tantalizing potential of his old team in his new squad.

The New York Jets cornerback, who helped the Los Angeles Rams reach the playoffs last season, was feeling predictably optimistic as he and his teammates reported to the team's facility Thursday for the start of training camp.

"You've got to have faith," Johnson said. "Just bringing that winning culture from where I was last year, I can see it. I really can. Just got to wait and see."

Johnson was the Jets' biggest free-agent acquisition this offseason, signing a five-year, $72.5 million deal in March that included a $20 million signing bonus and $34 million in guaranteed money. That came after the cornerback spent his first six NFL seasons with the Rams, who went 11-5 and snapped a 13-year postseason drought with Johnson a key part of the defense.

He'll be the No. 1 cornerback in coach Todd Bowles' unit in New York, which hasn't been to the playoffs since the 2010 season. Johnson saw signs from afar that the postseason absence might not last much longer, particularly because seven of New York's 11 losses last season were by 9 points or less.

"I was watching them," he said. "They were losing close games and they beat some playoff teams. They've got all the potential in the world to be a playoff team."

Most NFL teams feel the same at this point in the year, brimming with confidence before the dog days of camp start kicking in, with expectations for some becoming increasingly more tempered.

But the Jets like the approach the players are taking at the start.

"I can see the atmosphere has changed and the season could be great," guard Brian Winters said. "As far as attitudes, we've got great attitudes in the locker room. That vibe's a lot better than in the past."

New York is coming off its second straight 5-11 season under Bowles, who helped establish an improved environment around the team last year despite the losses.

The positive outlooks might be attributed in large part to moves general manager Mike Maccagnan made in the offseason. Along with Johnson Korey Toomer Color Rush Jersey , the Jets signed a number of free agents who could play major roles this year, including linebacker Avery Williamson, running back Isaiah Crowell, wide receiver Terrelle Pryor, center Spencer Long and kicker Cairo Santos.

"I think it was a good start," wide receiver Jermaine Kearse said of last season. "This year, it's about winning games. You want to be competitive, and that's important, but in this league, it's about winning games and being productive in that area. For us to take the next big step is to be able to finish games."

All eyes this summer, however, will be on the quarterbacks as 39-year-old veteran Josh McCown, comeback kid Teddy Bridgewater and first-round pick Sam Darnold all compete to be the guy leading the huddle in Week 1 of the regular season.

"I think it pushes each one of them individually," defensive end Leonard Williams said. "I'd be happy if any one of them were the starter for the season."

McCown is the incumbent and Bowles has said he will open camp as the starter while taking the bulk of the first-team snaps. But Bridgewater, signed in March after four seasons in Minnesota, could give McCown a run if he's fully recovered from the severe knee injury that cost him the bulk of the last two years.

Then John Smoltz Jersey , of course, there's Darnold.

The No. 3 overall pick in the draft is considered by many to be the future face of the franchise. And that future could be now. Darnold will be given every opportunity to beat out both McCown and Bridgewater for the job, and he showed positive strides in offseason workouts and minicamp.

"I thought Sam got better each day throughout OTAs," Kearse said. "And I have no doubt that he'll have the same attitude and same mindset he had in OTAs coming into camp."

Darnold just needs to get to camp first.

The rookie hadn't reported with the rest of his teammates as of early Thursday afternoon as his agents and the Jets worked through the final details of his contract. There didn't appear to be much concern on either side, though, with most expecting Darnold to be signed and ready to participate in the team's first practice Friday afternoon.

That's when the road to potential success begins for the Jets, and nose tackle Steve McLendon believes it comes down to three things for him and his teammates.

"No. 1, it's being focused," he said. "No. 2, it's being driven. And, No. 3, you understand you only have one life."

NOTES: Long, coming off knee and quadriceps injuries last season with Washington, said his quad is doing "great" and knees are "feeling better than they have the last few years." He added that he might be eased into practices, depending on how the training staff wants to approach it.

NEW YORK — Through their first 66 games Darius Leonard Jersey Colts , the New York Yankees have shaken hands 46 times to celebrate a win.

While some of the big names such as Giancarlo Stanton, Gary Sanchez and Didi Gregorius have experienced slumps, a consistent bat is Aaron Judge.

Judge is following up winning Rookie of the Year by constantly delivering key hits for the Yankees, who go for the four-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

After setting a rookie record with 52 homers, Judge is batting .283 with 18 homers and 46 RBIs to go along with a .399 on-base percentage and 49 runs. He leads the Yankees in homers, RBIs and runs scored while his 17 doubles are second-most behind rookie Miguel Andujar.

“He’s just such a good player,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Even when Aaron goes through a few days where he’s not swinging great, the at-bat quality doesn’t really change all that much. You know night in and night out, he’s going to make it really hard on the pitchers and they understand that they have to make their best pitches just to retire him.”

Judge left the homers to Stanton and Sanchez on Saturday but contributed a pair of doubles in a 4-1 victory. He is 8-for-18 on the homestand and has 19 hits in his last 63 at-bats.

“That’s one of my main goals every year, just try to be consistent, especially with the lineup we got,” Judge said. “If I can consistently get on base for the guys around me, I feel like we’ll have a pretty good game.”

Judge’s contributions to the latest win occurred on a day when Sanchez homered for the first time since May 19 at Kansas City against the Royals. He had a bases-clearing double Friday and snapped a 66 at-bat stretch without a homer.

Even with some of the ebbs and flows of some other hitters, the Yankees own the best record in baseball and are 13-3 in their last 16 games.

“We’ve had timely hits Justin Bethel Jersey Elite , big hits, guys step up,” Stanton said. We haven’t all clicked at the same time. Once that happens and we’re on all cylinders, there’s more room to get better.”

Tampa Bay is hoping Sunday is not when everything clicks for the Yankees given its recent history.

Only Matt Duffy’s ninth-inning homer avoided a second straight shutout. The Rays are 4-12 in their last 16 and on a nine-game road losing streak.

“It’s frustrating losing games,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said after his team mustered five hits and struck out 10 times. “You want these guys to come up here and experience success personally and as a team and the good thing is, we talk about it all the time, these guys have won together, they’re going to be able to withstand some tough stretches.”

It has been a particularly tough stretch for the Rays against the Yankees. They are 0-5 in the season series while getting outscored 31-10.

Tampa Bay is also 10-24 in its last 34 games against the Yankees since Aug. 12, 2016, and 4-18 in its last 22 trips to New York since. That was the day Alex Rodriguez played his last game and one day before Judge made his major league debut.

“That’s a good hitting team,” Duffy said. “We’ve held them to a pretty modest amount of runs considering what they’re capable of, especially in their home park.”

After Luis Severino dominated for eight innings Saturday, CC Sabathia will start for the 522nd time in his career and when he does, he will break a tie with Hall of Famer Jim Palmer and former teammate Andy Pettitte for 38th place on the all-time list.

Sabathia will also go for his 242nd career win Dalton Schultz Jersey Cowboys , which is one behind former Cleveland Indians teammate Bartolo Colon and Hall of Famer Juan Marichal for 54th on the all-time list.

The left-hander is 4-1 with a 3.15 ERA in 10 starts since returning from a brief disabled list stint April 19. He last pitched Tuesday against the Washington Nationals when he became the fifth pitcher to get 1,500 strikeouts with the Yankees and allowed four hits in 5 2/3 innings of a 3-0 victory.

Overall, Sabathia is at 2,893 strikeouts and inching closer to becoming the 17th pitcher to reach 3,000 strikeouts, though he was not aware he reached 1,500 after striking out Michael A. Taylor on Tuesday.

The left-hander is 16-14 with a 3.77 ERA in 45 career starts against the Rays. His 45 starts and 296 innings pitched against Tampa Bay are his most against any opponent.

Sabathia is 5-0 with a 3.57 ERA in his last seven starts against the Rays.

Tampa Bay will use a reliever to open the game for the second straight time. After Ryne Stanek started by throwing 21 pitches in 1 1/3 innings Saturday, Wilmer Font will pitch.

“It’s weird,” Stanton said of Tampa Bay’s unorthodox strategy. “It’s just like a guy coming out of the pen, how you prep for him, except you do it at the beginning of the game. Get ready for the starter. It’s weird, out of order, but the same sequence.”

Font is 0-1 with a 2.31 ERA in six appearances since joining the Rays last month and Sunday will be his third start for the Rays. On Wednesday, he threw 66 pitches and allowed two hits in 3 1/3 innings during a 1-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Rays will make a roster move as shortstop Christian Arroyo will be placed on the disabled list with a strained oblique and Adeiny Hechavarria will be recalled from his rehab assignment after missing 28 games with a strained right hamstring.

One day after being eliminated from playoff contention for the second straight year Mike Foltynewicz Atlanta Braves Jersey , the reeling New York Islanders were glad to get another win.

Andrew Ladd scored the tiebreaking goal late in the third period to lift the Islanders to a 4-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night.

Anders Lee, Anthony Beauvillier and Brock Nelson also scored to help New York get just its third win in 17 games (3-10-4). Jaroslav Halak stopped 33 shots.

”As athletes we want to win, we hate losing so we want to compete, we want to go out there and work hard do the right thing,” Beauvillier said. ”It’s about pride, it’s about playing for us and it’s about feeling good about ourselves.”

Matt Duchene, Erik Karlsson and Bobby Ryan scored for Ottawa, which has lost six straight for the second time this season. Mike Condon finished with 27 saves.

”It’s frustrating,” said Duchene, who also had two assists. ”I thought we were probably the better team start to finish. We had a lot of sustained pressure in their end, some really good scoring chances and Halak was good for them. It’s frustrating, even though the points don’t mean anything right now, you want to win games.”

Ryan tied the score 3-3 for Ottawa with 4:34 left after he sent a shot on goal and New York’s Brandon Davidson deflected it into his own net.

Ladd regained the lead for the Islanders with 2:03 remaining as he tipped Thomas Hickey’s shot past Condon for his 11th of the season.

”It was a little scrambly game, but we kept fighting and it was good to see (Ladd) get the winner Cordy Glenn Jersey Elite ,” Islanders coach Doug Weight said. ”We had to weather some storms. They put a lot of pucks on the net. They had some pretty good power play looks and we managed to hold on so it was good.

”It was a good win.”

Trailing 2-1, the Islanders tied it in the game 1:23 into the second as Beauvillier beat Condon with Jordan Eberle in front to screen.

The Senators had a number of chances to regain the lead as they outshot New York 13-7 in the middle period, but Halak made several big saves.

Nelson gave the Islanders a 3-2 lead with 1:18 to go in the period as he fired a wrist shot past Condon for his 18th of the season.

The Islanders opened the scoring on the power play 6:15 into the game as Lee, with his team-high 39th, backhanded John Tavares‘ rebound past Condon.

The Senators then scored twice to take the lead. Jean-Gabriel Pageau’s shot went in off Duchene with 7:06 left in the first, and then Karlsson’s ninth of the season put Ottawa in front less than two minutes later.

Ottawa native Ben Sexton, who was recalled Sunday, played his second NHL game and first on home ice. His father, Randy, was the Senators’ general manager from 1993-95.

NOTES: Ottawa D Ben Harpur was a healthy scratch. … Senators RW Mark Stone missed his ninth straight game with a leg injury, while Marian Gaborik missed his third straight game with an undisclosed injury. … Davidson knocked a puck into his own goal for the second straight game. On Monday night in a 3-0 loss at home against Florida, the Panthers’ Evgenii Dadonov sent a pass from the left side boards toward the net for a streaking Nick Bjugstad, but the puck deflected off Davidson’s skate and past goalie Christopher Gibson.

The Marlins overtook the Mets on the scoreboard and in the standings Saturday.

And for the second game in a row Youth Mason Rudolph Jersey , Miami beat New York with a rookie pitcher making his first major league start.

Brian Anderson hit a two-run homer off Jacob deGrom and the Marlins climbed out of last place in the NL East by rallying past the reeling Mets, 5-2.

”We’re not in last place? Awesome,” said J.T. Riddle, whose scratch RBI single put Miami ahead to stay.

The Mets (32-48) lost for the 10th time in 11 games and fell into last place for the first time this year. They finished 5-21 this month for the worst June in franchise history, and they’ve plummeted from 10 games over .500 to 15 under at an earlier date than any team in major league history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

”It was not the goal when we came in,” deGrom said. ”This is the complete opposite. Nobody’s happy with that.”

Meanwhile, the rebuilding Marlins (34-50) went 14-14 in June, their best month this season.

They seem to get better as they get younger. Pablo Lopez (1-0) allowed two runs in six innings in his major league debut less than 24 hours after Sandy Alcantara won his first big league start Friday. Both are 22.

The last time two pitchers on the same National League team earned wins in their first career starts in consecutive days was in 1967 when Gary Nolan and Mel Queen did so for the Reds Authentic Rasmus Dahlin Jersey , according to Stats LLC.

DeGrom took a 2-0 lead into the sixth, but Anderson’s fifth homer tied it. Riddle beat out a dribbler to the first baseman for a two-out RBI hit that put Miami ahead.

”I thought that swinging bunt was foul,” deGrom said. ”I should have gone over there and got it.”

Another fielding lapse cost the Mets in the seventh. J.T. Realmuto hit a two-run double after an error by shortstop Amed Rosario prolonged the inning.

Drew Steckenrider pitched a perfect eighth, and Kyle Barraclough earned his eighth save with a 1-2-3 ninth. Steckenrider has thrown 15 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings, and Barraclough has thrown 20 2/3 – two more reasons the Marlins are on the rise.

”We’re gaining some type of identity as to what kind of games we need to play to win,” manager Don Mattingly said. ”We’re not going to outslug anybody. We’re going to have to pitch and play defense and scratch for runs.”

The Mets’ runs came on solo homers against Lopez. Jose Bautista hit his fifth of the year, his third with the Mets. Todd Frazier added his ninth.

DeGrom (5-4), who departed after six innings trailing 3-2, fell to 1-4 in his past five starts despite allowing only 15 runs. His ERA Authentic Quenton Nelson Jersey , lowest in the majors coming into the game, rose to 1.84.

”I am definitely frustrated,” he said. ”I’m tired of losing.”

ROOKIE PITCHERS

Lopez was the 17th rookie and 12th rookie pitcher used by Marlins, both most in the majors.

”As soon as I stepped out of the dugout, I just kept looking up in the stands, and they were so big, all the way up to the sky,” the Venezuelan right-hander said. ”This is where I wanted to be. I just needed to calm myself down.”

Four pitchers have made their first major league start against New York this year, and they’ve combined to go 3-0 with an ERA of 1.57. But at the moment Adidas Jeff Skinner Jersey , the Mets are having trouble beating anybody.

”It’s difficult right now,” first-year manager Mickey Callaway said. ”I know the players are feeling it. I know the fans are feeling.”

EFFORT ISSUE?

Mets pinch-hitter Jose Reyes appeared not to run out a grounder to short in the seventh.

”It looked like that to us, too,” Callaway said. ”I went to talk to Rey-Rey, and he said he felt something out of the box and he was scared he was going to pull something. He kind of pulled up halfway. I thought that maybe he was frustrated, but he felt something coming out of the box.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Mets: RHP Noah Syndergaard (finger) and LHP Jason Vargas (calf) are expected to start against each other in a simulated game next week at Single-A Port St. Lucie.

UP NEXT

Mets LHP Steven Matz (3-5, 3.69), who has thrown 13 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings at Marlins Park, is scheduled to start the series finale Sunday against RHP Dan Straily (3-3 Cheap Rashaan Gaulden Jersey , 4.82).

The Houston Texans released right tackle Derek Newton on Thursday.

Newton tore the patellar tendon in both knees in a Week 7 game against the Denver Broncos in 2016. He didn't play again for Houston, sitting out 2017 on the physically unable to perform list. Newton failed a physical in March.

A starter for every game in 2013, '14 and '15, Newton got a five-year, $26.5 million contract from the Texans. He was a seventh-round selection in the 2011 draft and played in 82 games with 68 starts. His versatility showed when he also played some left tackle and both guard positions for Houston.

"I've always admired Derek Newton's work ethic and dedication to the game of football," coach Bill O'Brien said. "He has been a terrific teammate and someone who constantly put the team first. We wish him the best."
