Hackers Deface Trump Campaign Website to Promote Crypto Scam

Hackers have defaced the campaign website of U.S. President Donald Trump to promote a Monero (XMR) scam. The hack lasted less than 30 minutes, and it’s unclear whether the attackers receive any XMR.

In a statement Tim Murtaugh, a spokesman for the Trump campaign, confirmed the defacement and said the campaign is “working with law enforcement authorities to investigate the source of the attack,” and added no sensitive data was exposed.

The defacement saw hackers accuse the Trump administration, without proof, of having a hand in the origin of the coronavirus and cooperating with “foreign actors manipulating the 2020 elections.” The hackers claimed to have compromised “multiple devices” that gave them access to “internal and secret conversations” of the president and his relatives.

They asked for visitors to donate XMR to one of two funds as a “vote” – one to share the data, and one to not share it. The hackers also posted an encryption key to verify future information came from them. The key was tied to an email address at a non-existent website.
