Denies Suffering a Data Leak After Resetting Some Users’ Passwords
The popular Poloniex
cryptocurrency exchange has denied suffering a data leak, after resetting the
passwords of some users affected by said leak. Earlier this week the exchange
contacted a few users regarding a tweet leaking their email addresses and passwords.
Now, Poloniex has clarified the
data leak didn’t come from it, and that it was merely responding to an
“external threat.” In a statement it said:
“To confirm, there was no information or
data leak originating from Poloniex and our actions represented a swift
response to an external threat."
The exchange added that its
investigation found that “approximately 90% of the passwords listed” were
already in a database of exploited passwords. It further clarified that less
than 5% of the email addresses from the data leak were associated with
accounts on Poloniex.
