Apple
CEO Against Privately Issued Cryptocurrencies
Apple chief executive Tim
Cook—who has historically said very little publicly about Bitcoin and the
cryptocurrencies in general—told the Les Echos daily newspaper on Thursday
that companies should not be trying to gain power by setting up competing
currencies, according to Reuters.
Asked whether the technology
giant was looking to mimic the proposed Libra stablecoin—which is being
spearheaded by Facebook and other founding Libra Association members—Cook
said it currently has no place on Apple’s agenda.
“I really think that a currency
should stay in the hands of countries. I’m not comfortable with the idea of a
private group setting up a competing currency,” he explained.
