But the roster needs upgraded Greg Luzinski Jersey , and players signed to short-term deals can be traded for prospects over the summer."Orioles fans know that the free agent stove isn’t going to be that hot in Baltimore this winter. A team coming off a 115-loss season that just started what seems to be a massive organizational rebuild isn’t going to be throwing cash around to top free agents. After all, that would require a front office actually being in place. The industry agrees with this sentiment. MLB Trade Rumors released their annual Top 50 MLB Free Agents With Predictions and does not predict one of those players signing in Baltimore. In Jim Bowden’s piece highlighting the 35 best free agents and where they fit, he mentions the Orioles as potential fits for only two players. Forget hot, the stove may not even be lukewarm. But the Orioles do need to add players to their 2019 roster. Anybody who watched this team in September knows that. They jettisoned Manny Machado, Jonathan Schoop, Brad Brach, Kevin Gausman, Darren O’Day, and Zach Britton at the trading deadline. Adam Jones will likely depart as a free agent. A new front office may want to complete the teardown of the major league roster by trading remaining assets for young talent. Possible trade candidates are Dylan Bundy, Mychal Givens, Andrew Cashner http://www.philliesfanproshop.com/authentic-pat-neshek-jersey , Jonathan Villar, Mark Trumbo, and Richard Bleier (the last two depending on recovery from injury).Roch Kubatko indicated that the team will be at least somewhat active in the free agency market. He specifically cites question marks in right field, third base, catcher, and middle infield. Any trades made will most likely bring back players who are young and not ready for the majors. So yes, it appears as though the Orioles will have to sign some free agents in order to field anything that resembles a major league team.In addition to the need to put a somewhat competitive club on the field after a disastrous 2018 season (how would the fanbase and attendance react to another 115-loss season?), there is another need to sign some free agents: they could be flipped at the trade deadline for prospects. The Orioles farm system was universally ranked in the bottom third of the league coming into the 2018 season. July trades, the drafting of Grayson Rodriguez and Blaine Knight, getting back into the international market, and having the first overall pick in June’s draft will all positively impact the talent pipeline. With that said Mitch Williams Jersey , the O’s minor league system is by no means great. Any opportunity to add talent and/or depth to it should be taken advantage of. Without many quality assets left to trade for minor league talent, signing free agents is one way of paving the way for trades this summer. It goes without saying that the Orioles should target free agents who are willing to accept one or two year deals so that the financial commitment isn’t overbearing if a trade doesn’t work out. The bottom half of MLB Trade Rumors’ list is comprised of projected one or two year deals. The other half of the equation is a player signing in Baltimore would need to be willing to play on a really bad team. What positions should the O’s target in free agency (position by position list of free agents found here)? The only two players Jim Bowden mentions the Orioles as fits for are outfielders Adam Jones and Carlos Gonzalez. I would love to see Jones back in Baltimore for sentimental reasons, but the outfield and DH appear to be set with some combination of Trey Mancini, Cedric Mullins, Mark Trumbo, and DJ Stewart. A host of other young outfielders could be ready at some point this year and it wouldn’t be wise for the Orioles to block major league ready prospects. I would hold off on signing an outfielder unless the deal is too good to pass up. Third base was mentioned by Kubatko as a potential position of need, but the list of available players is.... uninspiring. There is not one player (with a realistic chance of signing here) that I’d want. Renato Nunez it is! Depending on where Jonathan Villar plays and if Tim Beckham is non-tendered, middle infield is an area where the O’s could sign a free agent. There are several above-replacement level players on that list, including some who have had productive seasons recently. Many will get short contracts. Pitching, starting and relief, is where I think the Orioles should be most active. There is definitely a need Dave Cash Jersey , as Buck Showalter had tremendous difficulty getting through games with his pitching staff in September. After Dylan Bundy, Alex Cobb, and Andrew Cashner, there are no proven major league ready options to fill out the rotation. Out in the bullpen, a solid veteran group was decimated by the July trades. Mychal Givens, a 28-year-old who was drafted as an infielder, is now the elder statesman. If pitchers down on the farm prove themselves ready over the summer, there is always a market for pitchers at the trade deadline. A look at a wrap-up of last year’s deadline trades indicates just how in demand pitching is. Teams are relying more and more on relievers in the postseason, making even slightly above average arms valuable. Not every player traded in July is at the caliber of Zach Britton; many are barely above replacement level. Those are the types of players who will accept one-year contracts this winter. We have weeks and months to debate exactly which players the Orioles should target as the market ebbs and flows. But for now I’m arguing that the Warehouse should be selectively active in the free agent market despite embarking on a rebuild. There are players available who are cheap, would upgrade the roster, and could be flipped to further restock the farm system over the summer.  World Series title. His next goal is to try to win one for the team he grew up rooting for and defeated this October. The Dodgers on Friday officially announced signing Kelly to a three-year deal worth $25 million that brings the 30-year old right-hander back to Southern California. Kelly was born in Anaheim and grew up in Corona Gleyber Torres Jersey , where most of his family still resides.“It is one of those things where I am at a point in my career where I have tons of family that is local. I also wanted to be on a team that wins year in and year out,” Kelly said during a conference call.Kelly leaves Boston, who acquired him from St. Louis in July 2014. He is expected to be a setup man for closer Kenley Jansen, who is still recovering from an offseason heart procedure.Kelly gets a $1 million signing bonus and salaries of $3 million next year and $8.5 million in each of the following two seasons. The Dodgers have a $12 million team option for 2022 with a $4 million buyout. He could earn $2 million annually in performance bonuses for games finished: $250,000 each for 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 55, and $500,000 for 60.Upgrading setup and middle relief was one of the Dodgers’ priorities during the offseason.“The reliever market has been interesting to see. For teams that are championship-caliber, that’s a big role and it doesn’t get magnified until the playoffs,” Kelly said. “Without a good bullpen it is very hard to win a World Series.”Kelly made the fourth-most appearances in the American League last season (73) and was 4-2 with a 4.39 ERA and two saves. His numbers improved greatly during the postseason as he allowed just one earned run in 11 1/3 innings with 13 strikeouts and no walks. In the World Series, Kelly appeared in all five games and did not allow a run, striking out 10 in six innings.According to Brooks Baseball Tyler Austin Jersey , Kelly’s fastball averaged 98.7 mph this season, but he also used his changeup more and developed a slurve after deciding to shelve his slider and curveball. Kelly said mechanically he changed some stuff with his arm slot in order to deliver the ball quicker.Besides the World Series, Kelly has been a bit of a nemesis for the Dodgers. He broke Hanley Ramirez’s rib when he hit him with a pitch in the 2013 NL Championship Series opener. Kelly said the pitch got away from him and that both of them talked it out when Ramirez joined the Red Sox in 2015.Kelly hit the New York Yankees’ Tyler Austin on the back with a pitch April 11, four innings after Austin spiked Red Sox shortstop Brock Holt when he slid into second base with a high right foot. That set off a brawl and Kelly was suspended for six games.Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations, said he likes Kelly’s ability to provide more than one inning out of the bullpen and that he could be used in a variety of situations. Is there any doubt who the heart and soul of the Indians is?"If there was any doubt about the true face, heart, and soul of the Indians, this past season wiped it all away. Maybe you considered Corey Kluber to be the embodiment of the Indians. Or maybe Jose Ramirez, or maybe even the older vets like Michael Brantley or Jason Kipnis. This season was a wake-up call to the naysayers — Cleveland is Frankie’s town. The Indians’ charismatic shortstop has taken huge step after huge step every year since he debuted in 2015 and 2018 was no exception. His offensive numbers were better across the board compared to last season, with the exception of a strikeout rate that rose 1.5 percent. The trade-off for that nominal bump in whiffs (14 over 745 plate appearances), was a jump in every aspect of his slash line to .277/.352/.519, 38 home runs, and a 9.4 percent walk rate — the highest of his career. For good measure, he also stole 25 bases on the season; the first time he’s stolen at least 20 bags since he swiped 28 between Double-A and Triple-A in 2014. Coming into the season — and into the strapping young age of 24 — Lindor had bulked up http://www.yankeesfanproshop.com/authentic-giancarlo-stanton-jersey , ready to mash taters like he never had before. He reportedly didn’t change much of his workout routine, but he didn’t need to. At this point it’s clear whatever he’s doing (and he claims it’s a once-a-week lifting routine) is working, and it worked in 2018 to the tune of a new career-high in home runs and hard-hit balls.According to Baseball Savant, Lindor’s average exit velocity jumped a full two points to 90.3 miles per hour, after three straight seasons of it being anywhere from 87 to 88.2 miles per hour. This added up to a 40.7 percent hard-hit rate, well above his previous career-high of 37 percent he set in his shortened rookie campaign. In particular, Lindor improved hitting balls down in the zone harder. Take a look at his exit velocity heat maps from 2017 and 2018, respectively. 2017Baseball Savant2018Baseball SavantHe hit everything harder than ever, of course, but nothing took the leap quite like his average exit velo on low strikes. That, combined with continuing to raise his launch angle, helped him finish sixth in the American League with 38 home runs. The scrawny shortstop that never saw himself as a 35 home run hitter back in his Single-A days has turned himself into a true power hitter. Power is the newest, most exciting addition to Lindor’s repertoire but it’s hardly the only thing he contributes on a daily basis to the Indians. The 24-year-old prided himself on leading the league with 129 runs this season, which of course means hitters behind him — especially Jose Ramirez and Michael Brantley — get a lot of credit. But Lindor helped himself out a lot with his 25 stolen bases and overall aggressiveness on the bases. There’s one unintended side effect of Lindor being the permanent lead-off man that I absolutely love: he didn’t bunt as much. After bunting 20 (!!!) times in 99 games (!!!!!) in his rookie year, and a combined 12 times in 2016 and 2017 Miguel Andujar Jersey , Lindor opted to give away one of his team’s finite outs to advance runners just four times in 2018. A big part of that is because he simply came up to bat with runners on base fewer times as the lead-off batter. He came up to the plate 50 times with runners on base and no one out (aka New Bunt City USA) in 2018, compared to 67 times in 2017 and 81 times in 2016. Take it with a grain of salt that he slashed .194/.340/.361 in those at-bats, but he also walked 16 percent of the time. His bunt totals should be down to zero as one of the best hitters in all of baseball — in my humble opinion — but for now I’ll take a dramatic decrease in attempts. Unfortunately, he did lay down a bunt in the ALDS when he was the only Indians batter playing worth a damn that series. So clearly his bunt-first mentality still exists deep in his psyche somewhere — I just wish someone could pull him out of it. And lastly, Lindor improved another important aspect of his game: his personality. He’s already one of the most likable players in the game, but he stepped up as a leader in the clubhouse and in post-game interviews, and the man twerked for our sins. Seeing him homer in his home territory of Puerto Rico and lose his dang mind rounding the bases was a magical sight, even if he (wrongly) felt like he had to apologize for it afterwards. Lindor is consistent, he’s great, he’s fun, and he’s everything the Indians need to get over the hump sooner rather than later. He just needs his teammates to step up with him.

DETROIT (AP) — This was the type of win that Detroit fans can be encouraged by — not only did the Tigers rally in the late innings Martin Maldonado Jersey , but one of their top young players delivered the key home run.Christin Stewart hit a two-out grand slam in the seventh inning, lifting Detroit to a 7-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. The Tigers trailed 4-2 in the seventh but rallied against Kansas City’s struggling bullpen.Kevin McCarthy (0-1) allowed three hits and a hit batter. The only out on his watch came with the score 4-3, when Alex Gordon threw Josh Harrison out at the plate. Detroit eventually loaded the bases with two out, and Stewart hit a drive down the line in right field off Wily Peralta.“I love the kid. I said he can hit. I said he’s going to be a power hitter,” Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said. “He’s going to have his ups and downs. He’s going to chase. He’s going to have some bad at-bats, but it’s a growing experience for him.”Stewart is hitting just .143, but this was the second home run of the season for Detroit’s rookie outfielder. His other one was also big — a 10th-inning shot at Toronto that provided all the scoring in a 2-0 victory in the season opener.“Won both games, that’s the biggest thing,” Stewart said. “I’m just thankful I was able to be a part to help us.”After the game, Stewart got the grand slam ball back, giving a fan a signed bat in exchange.Whit Merrifield, Jorge Soler and Hunter Dozier all homered for the Royals, but Kansas City’s bullpen — which entered the game with a 7.45 ERA — couldn’t hold on.Shane Greene pitched a perfect ninth and now has saves in all six Detroit victories this season — without blowing any. The Tigers have won four straight, and the Royals have dropped five in a row.“If I get frustrated, then the players see that I’m frustrated http://www.angelsfanproshop.com/authentic-zack-cozart-jersey , then all of a sudden they start pressing more because they don’t want this, they don’t like this,” Kansas City manager Ned Yost said. “So my job is not to get frustrated, my job is to continue to support and continue to lead these guys through this period. They’re going to get through it.”Tigers starter Matt Moore retired the first eight hitters he faced, but he left the game after three innings with a right knee injury. The team announced it as a sprain, although Gardenhire described it afterward as a strain. Detroit announced it would put Moore on the 10-day injured list. Daniel Norris, who pitched three innings in relief of Moore, is joining the rotation in his place.Detroit led 2-0 in the sixth when Merrifield hit a solo shot, extending his hitting streak to 27 games. Kansas City then tied it in the seventh on a home run by Soler, and Dozier hit a two-run homer off Victor Alcantara (2-0) later that inning.Nicholas Castellanos hit an RBI single in the seventh for the Tigers, and Miguel Cabrera followed with a single that could have loaded the bases with nobody out. Instead, third-base coach Dave Clark sent Harrison, who was thrown out at home. One out later, Jeimer Candelario drew a walk that loaded the bases for Stewart.Merrifield’s hitting streak, which dates to last season Darin Erstad Jersey , is now tied for the second-longest in Royals’ history. Jose Offerman had a 27-game streak in 1998, and George Brett had a 30-game run in 1980.Royals first baseman Frank Schwindel, whose error in the second gave Detroit the game’s first run, singled in the seventh for his first career hit.Cabrera hit an RBI single in the fifth that put the Tigers up 2-0.STARTERSMoore’s three scoreless innings lowered the ERA for Detroit’s starters to 2.12. The only baserunner he allowed came on the play when he got hurt. He went to the ground to field Billy Hamilton’s bunt to the right of the mound. Hamilton ended up with an infield single and went to second on Moore’s throwing error. Moore finished the inning, then left the game.Kansas City starter Jorge Lopez allowed one earned run in six innings.“I feel good since first inning,” Lopez said. “The plan was to be down, looking for soft contact.”TRAINER’S ROOMTigers: OF JaCoby Jones (left shoulder) and RHP Drew VerHagen (right shoulder) started rehab assignments with Class A Lakeland on Friday night. Jones went 1 for 4 but struck out three times, which left Gardenhire a bit bemused. “Says, ‘When am I getting out of this place?’ You’re in A ball, just struck out three times,” Gardenhire said with a smile. “When you get a couple hits, not strike out three times in A ball — that would be my answer.”UP NEXTRoyals: RHP Brad Keller (1-0) takes the mound in the series finale Sunday. Because of off days, he’ll be able to start for the third time in Kansas City’s first eight games.Tigers: RHP Tyson Ross (0-1) makes his first home start for Detroit after signing in the offseason.

WEST PALM BEACH Kevin Kiermaier Jersey , Fla. (AP) —  get to Houston.Texas declined its $4.5 million option on the catcher shortly before the 34-year-old traveled to Japan last November with a big league all-star team. He developed a friendship with the squad’s pitching coach, Houston’s Brent Strom. Less than a month later, the Astros agreed to a $5.75 million, one-year contract.“When I signed, he called me and he was saying, ‘I told you you were coming here Alex Cobb Jersey ,'” Chirinos said of Strom.During the Japan trip, Chirinos liked the way Strom worked to improve pitchers who weren’t even on his major league team.“It showed a lot of the kind of person he is,” Chirinos said. “He cared about the pitchers.”Meanwhile, Strom relayed information about Chirinos’ character to his bosses.“Just the personality and the presence, not necessarily the catching,” Houston manager A.J. Chirinos impressed against Houston last year Wade Boggs Jersey , hitting three of his 18 home runs against the Astros.“He’s got a big swing. He likes hitting in our ballpark,” Hinch said. “I hope he likes hitting against the opponent in our ballpark as much he liked hitting against us.”Chirinos was 5 for 15 in spring training with one home run entering Tuesday. He has been focused on developing relationships with Houston’s pitchers.“I think his openness to listening is very impressive,” said Hinch, a former major league catcher. “I know it sounds like it should be common, but for someone who’s been in the league it’s easy to feel like you know everything and he gives off no impression that he knows everything, and I can appreciate that.”Chirinos has altered the way he sets up behind the plate and presents his target.“We demand a lot of our catchers in this organization with our pitching staff Wilson Ramos Jersey ,” said pitcher Collin McHugh, who first played with Chirinos on that Japan tour. “He’s been really willing and eager to come and learn, come and listen, and willing to get his feet wet.” The Atlanta Braves came out on the wrong side of an 8-6 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 2 of their three-game series on Saturday. The Washington Nationals Rickey Henderson Jersey , who have won two straight division titles and three in the past four years, need a miracle to make the playoffs this season. visit the Miami Marlins to start a quick two-game series. The Nationals enter Monday in third place in the NL East, trailing the division-leading Atlanta Braves by 7.5 games.Article continues below ...The Nationals are also six games out of the second and final wild-card spot with just 12 contests left on their schedule. Worse yet, the Nationals trail five teams in the wild-card standings.“It’s a bummer we’re not winning games,” Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper told the media recently. “That’s the biggest thing on my mind.”If Harper is disappointed, imagine how the Marlins feel. Miami (58-91) has the worst record in the National League and the third-lowest win percentage in the majors.Miami hasn’t won consecutive games since Aug. 24-25, and the Marlins have gone 5-13 in that span.Monday’s pitching matchup features a pair of 25-year-old rookie right-handers: Miami’s Trevor Richards against Washington’s Erick Fedde.Richards (3-9, 4.85 ERA) has struck out at least seven batters in six of his 22 games this season. He has a below-average fastball (90.8 as opposed to the league norm of 93.1 mph). But he survives on a nasty changeup.Lately, though, it appears teams have figured him out. In his past seven starts, Richards is 0-4 with a 6.68 ERA.Perhaps a good omen for Richards is the fact that he pitched six scoreless innings the only time he faced the Nationals at Marlins Park this year, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out eight.Fedde (2-3, 5.12 ERA), a Las Vegas native, was Washington’s first-round pick in 2014, coming out of UNLV.His best pitch may be his hard (94 mph) slider, and this will be his first-ever start against the Marlins, so there could be an adjustment required of Miami hitters.Fedde is coming off his best start of the season, holding the Philadelphia Phillies scoreless for 5 2/3 innings on Tuesday, striking out nine while allowing just two hits. One of the batters Fedde will have to pitch carefully to is Marlins right fielder Peter O’Brien Catfish Hunter Jersey , a 6-4, 235-pounder who has massive power but has yet to get his major league career untracked at age 28.A former University of Miami star, O’Brien was picked up by the hometown Marlins earlier this month and has two homers and five RBIs in his past three starts.“We’re going to get him extended playing time as we finish up,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said of O’Brien. “He has a good approach and a feel for his game, which is that he can hit the ball out of the ballpark.”Indeed, O’Brien hit 26 homers in 2013, 39 in 2014, 32 in 2015 and 29 in 2016. He hit just 16 homers last year but has 32 this season in a bounce-back campaign.Still, out of all those homes, only eight have come in the majors, where his career OPS is just .699.“I’m looking to have quality at-bats,” O’Brien told the media on Sunday when asked about his approach. “Consistency is the main thing.”Harper, of course, is Washington’s big bat. He has 97 RBIs, 97 runs scored and 118 walks. He is on track to become just the sixth player since 2014 to record 100 in each of those categories.A free agent after this season ends, Harper — who turns 26 next month — needs to drive in two more runs to tie his career high.“I’m not worried about my numbers because I am who I am,” Harper said. “That sounds bad, but I am. On any given night, I’m able to do things that are special.”Harper hit just .214 with an .833 OPS in the first half of this season. But since then, he has hit .305 with a .985 OPS.The Nationals, who have won seven of their past nine games Rollie Fingers Jersey , have ridden the hot bats of Harper, Anthony Rendon and Juan Soto, among others.Rendon has reached base in 25 consecutive games, hitting .330 during that span. He hit his 20th homer on Sunday, marking the third straight season he has reached that milestone.Soto, 19, has reached base in 21 consecutive games. He entered with a 0.69 ERA but allowed more runs in the fourth inning (four) than he had in his first two starts combined.“I made a couple of bad pitches,” Márquez said. “I won’t have a carryover to my next start.”Acuña went deep on the first pitch of the second. Freeman singled in Josh Donaldson in the fourth before Swanson hit a drive to center for a three-run homer.Acuña also homered during Monday’s 8-6 victory over the Rockies.Ian Desmond hit an RBI single in the fourth for Colorado.TRAINER’S ROOMBraves: RHP Mike Foltynewicz (bone spur) could return to the rotation this weekend. Foltynewicz pitched 3 2/3 innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Gwinnett. “We will test him again tomorrow and make a decision http://www.bravesfanproshop.com/authentic-nick-markakis-jersey ,” Snitker said. “He could start in five games.”Rockies: OF David Dahl was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left-side core injury. He got hurt in his first at-bat Sunday night against the Dodgers. OF Yonathan Daza was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque and made his major league debut in right field.MILE HIGH MEMORYTuesday marked the 26th anniversary of Colorado’s first home game. The Rockies beat the Montreal Expos 11-4 that afternoon, with Eric Young homering in the first in front of a crowd of 80,227.Young, whose son, Eric Young Jr., also played for the Rockies, is now the first base coach for the Braves.FLASHING THE LEATHERFreeman helped Fried get out of a jam in the third. After Tony Wolters doubled and Marquez reached on a bunt single http://www.bravesfanproshop.com/authentic-nick-markakis-jersey , Freeman’s leaping catch of Daza’s line drive led to a double play.Fried then struck out Raimel Tapia to end the inning.“It’s incredible,” Fried said of Atlanta’s defense. “Some of these plays being made behind me only makes me want to just put the ball in play more.”UP NEXTBraves: RHP Kevin Gausman (1-0, 0.00) allowed just two hits over seven innings in his first start of the season against Miami.Rockies: RHP Jeff Hoffman will be recalled to make his first start of the season in place of LHP Tyler Anderson (left knee inflammation). For the last time this spring, we see an NL West rival."Interesting to see Ray going up against a divisional rival, in what I’m assuming is his final start before the regular season. It’s likely because we don’t see San Francisco until quite some way into the schedule - our first game against the Giants is not until May 17. Give how many at-bats they’ll have between now and then, it’s not as if seeing Ray for two or three this afternoon will make any difference. Jarrod Dyson starts in center. He has only managed five at-bats thus far in spring; Adam Jones hasn’t many more (9), so it’ll be interesting to see how the team handles playing time Mike Foltynewicz Jersey , with only three more pre-season games to go. Will there be enough PAs to get both men fully ready?I was hoping to get to this one, and hang out with snakecharmer and asteroid on the lawn at Scottsdale. Unfortunately, Mrs. SnakePit needed the car for work: as is, I’ll be putting my life on the line and taking the bus and light-rail over to Tempe later on. So the recap on this one will potentially be delayed, though I hope to get most of it knocked out before I begin my perilous journey by walking to a bus-stop! If you don’t hear from me again, you can get DNA off my tooth-brush. :)

DENVER — Zack Greinke http://www.indiansfanproshop.com/authentic-b.j.-upton-jersey , who relies more on guile these days but is still very effective, will start Tuesday for the Arizona Diamondbacks against the Colorado Rockies. (13-9, 3.08) after getting pounded 13-2 by the Rockies on Monday in the opener of a key four-game series. The Rockies (79-64) lead the National League West by 1 1/2 games with the Diamondbacks (76-68), losers of eight of their past 10 games, in third place, 3 1/2 games behind and four games back for the second NL wild-card spot.In his last outing Thursday, a no-decision against Atlanta, Greinke gave up a season-high tying five runs (four earned) in 5 1/3 innings. It was just the second time in 15 starts that Greinke allowed four earned runs, a stretch in which he’s 8-4, 2.40 with 20 walks and 90 strikeouts in 97 2/3 innings while holding opponents to a .211 batting average.Article continues below ...Overall, Greinke has 180 strikeouts Joe Carter Jersey , which ranks sixth in the NL, and just 37 walks in 181 1/3 innings, the fourth most in the league.“He’s smart, he knows hitters very well,” said Rockies right fielder Carlos Gonzalez, who has hit five home runs against Greinke, tied with teammate Trevor Story and Jason Giambi for the most Greinke has allowed to any hitter. “He knows how to keep you off his pitches. He nibbles a lot, and he gets calls because normally they’re really close. He’s going to try to be super fine or super far away from you. With a guy like him, we just got to be patient and at the same time, don’t miss that pitch (to hit) because that one pitch is all he’s going to give you (that at-bat).”Greinke is 2-0, 2.33 in three starts against the Rockies this year and 11-5 http://www.indiansfanproshop.com/authentic-b.j.-upton-jersey , 3.75 in 28 games (27 starts) against them. He’s 4-1, 4.20 in 11 games (10 starts) at Coors Field.Antonio Senzatela (4-5, 4.92) will start for the Rockies. He’s 2-4, 4.47 in nine starts since returning to the rotation July 3. Senzatela is 0-2, 6.75 in two games (one start) against the Diamondbacks this season and 0-3, 8.27 against them in six games (two starts). In his last start Wednesday against San Francisco, Senzatela allowed a career-high tying nine hits and three runs in five innings and ended up with a no-decision in Colorado’s 5-3 win.If the Diamondbacks have a save situation in the ninth, they won’t be turning to Brad Boxberger to get the final three outs. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo announced before Monday’s game that he has pulled Boxberger from the closer’s role. He has 32 saves in 39 chances, but in four games this month, Boxberger is 0-3, one-for-two in save situations and has allowed five hits Corey Kluber Jersey , three walks and six runs in two innings.Lovullo said he told Boxberger after Sunday’s game the Diamondbacks would rely on matchups in the ninth inning. On Sunday, Boxberger came on with the Diamondbacks leading Atlanta 5-4 and gave up two singles to start the inning and Ender Inciarte’s three-run homer.Lovullo said Boxberger was “on board” with the decision but obviously disappointed.“But at this point in time,” Lovullo said, “we just feel like we got to maximize every situation and every opportunity to get 27 outs. He’s still in that equation. It just might be done a little bit different.“It’s going to be done by matching up, trying to get through the situation the best that we can based on the hitters that are coming up and who’s available in the bullpen. With nine outs remaining, I typically was counting how to get through six outs. The only thing that will change is (I’ll) probably manage how to get nine outs because I was handing off that ninth inning to ‘Box.’ “ OAKLAND, Calif. — Having battled heavyweights for 10 consecutive games, the Oakland Athletics get a chance to enjoy the rivals knocking out each other when they open a three-game series against the last-place Texas Rangers on Friday night.Fresh from their first day off in three weeks, the A’s (84-57) will take the field 3 1/2 games behind Houston (87-53) atop the American League West. The Astros begin a tough series at Boston (97-44) on Friday night.Article continues below ...The A’s likewise find themselves 3 1/2 back of the New York Yankees (87-53) in the race for the top AL wild-card spot. Oakland won two of three from the AL East’s second-place team to slice one game off its deficit in a three-game series that ended Wednesday. The Yankees open a series at Seattle (78-62) on Friday. The Mariners are the A’s chief competition for the second wild-card spot, 5 1/2 games behind Oakland. In the Rangers, the A’s will be facing a team they’ve beaten in six of their last seven head-to-heads Ricky Vaughn Jersey , including a three-game series also in Oakland last month in which Texas suffered 9-0 and 6-0 defeats before rebounding with a 4-2 win in the finale. After having started Liam Hendriks and Frankie Montas a total of three times in their last seven games to fill voids created by injuries to Sean Manaea and Brett Anderson, the A’s will try someone relatively new, right-hander Chris Bassitt, against the Rangers on Friday.Oakland gave the 29-year-old a shot the last time the A’s played a non-contender — Aug. 26 at Minnesota — and Bassitt did his job, limiting the Twins to one run on four hits over 4 2/3 innings, setting the tone for a 6-2 win.It was his first start since July 11.Bassitt (2-3, 3.19 ERA) has faced the Rangers twice in his career, once as a starter, and has compiled an 0-1 record with an 11.25 ERA. He has not faced the Rangers since 2015.The A’s went 5-5 in their rugged 10-game stretch against the Astros, Mariners and Yankees. Their reward over the final 21 games — a cupcake-filled finish that includes six meetings with last-place teams and six with fourth-place squads.A’s center fielder Ramon Laureano assured that he and his teammates will remain focused even with the opponents having lesser credentials than those the team just got done dueling.“We just keep the same attitude,” the rookie professed. “Everybody stays hungry and keeps battling. We’re more hungry every day Michael Brantley Jersey , even when we win.”In Rangers right-hander Yovani Gallardo (8-3, 5.97), the A’s will see a veteran pitcher who beat them twice last season. That, however, merely improved the 32-year-old’s career record against Oakland in 11 meetings, including 10 starts, to 2-5 with a 4.47 ERA.The Rangers took advantage of a soft stretch in their own schedule, winning three of their last five against the Twins and Angels.Nomar Mazara was the big bomber for Texas, collecting three home runs and three doubles among eight hits in 19 at-bats (.421) in the five games.Adrian Beltre also had three homers, and Elvis Andrus added two homers in that stretch during which the Rangers totaled 33 runs.

FORT MYERS http://www.redsoxproshops.com/authentic-dustin-pedroia-jersey , Fla. (AP) — At least not around the Minnesota Twins.“That’s something I’ve heard used before, all the time,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said on Monday after welcoming Gonzalez to the team’s spring training ballpark. “We consider Marwin an everyday player. He’s just a multi-positional everyday player.”A veteran of seven seasons, all with the Astros, Gonzalez has played every position except pitcher and catcher — and played them well. In Houston’s 2017 World Series championship season, his best year, he committed eight errors in 134 games while batting .303 with 23 homers and 90 RBIs. He finished in the top 20 of the AL MVP voting.Despite a dropoff last year (.247, 16 HR, 68 RBIs), the Twins will pay Gonzalez $21 million for the next two years even though they don’t really have a spot for him.One spot wouldn’t be enough, anyway.“It’s kind of boring for me to be in the same spot every day,” he said. “I used to be that way Blake Swihart Jersey , years ago I wanted to be good at one position and be able to play there and establish myself for my entire career. With time, I fall in love with what I do and then I feel comfortable everywhere.”The Twins just gave shortstop Jorge Polanco a new deal and added Jonathan Schoop at second base and C.J. Cron at first. Third baseman Miguel Sano, an All-Star in 2017, is seen as a potential franchise cornerstone if he can stay healthy. The outfield is also crowded, with Eddie Rosario in left and Max Kepler in right; five-time All-Star Nelson Cruz, Minnesota’s highest-profile offseason addition, is the designated hitter. The Twins already had Ehire Adrianza as a backup infielder.Gonzalez expressed no preference for any one position — or even how he might choose to be bounced around — saying it was up to the manager to decide. Baldelli said they would figure that out over the next month. But it’s something he’s excited to think about.“It means everything. Because it doesn’t mean just one particular thing or two things. It just gives you so many different options,” Baldelli said.“What he does is incredibly difficult and challenging for most. But also not everyone embraces that role, either. To do what he does, it takes a very special player.”Gonzalez, who turns 30 next month, will receive $12 million this year and $9 million in 2020. To make room for him on the 40-man roster Rick Porcello Jersey , the Twins designated outfielder Zack Granite for assignment. The deal was agreed to in principle last week but not finalized until Gonzalez passed a physical. He said he has been working out in Houston before moving to Miami two weeks ago, doing all baseball activities except facing pitchers, to avoid injury.Dozens of free agents remain unsigned, including market leader Bryce Harper, who is expected to get a deal topping the $300 million, 10-year contract signed by shortstop Manny Machado only last week.Waiting until spring training was well underway before signing was “kind of frustrating,” Gonzalez said.“Especially the last week, going to social media and seeing everybody in a baseball uniform,” he said. “And you are just working out by yourself and getting ready for spring training. But I think that the wait was worth it. I couldn’t be in a better spot than down here.”__ Stacy Revere/Getty ImagesFormer MLB outfielder Jayson Werth said Wednesday that "super nerds" are killing baseball.Werth, who hinted toward retirement in June, believes the game's analytics revolution is having a negative impact on the sport, as he explained on theHoward Eskin Podcast(viaESPN.com):"They've got all these super nerds in the front office that know nothing about baseball but they like to project numbers and project players. ... I think it's killing the game. It's to the point where just put computers out there. Just put laptops and what have you http://www.oriolesfanproshop.com/authentic-j.j.-hardy-jersey , just put them out there and let them play. We don't even need to go out there anymore. It's a joke."Werth lamented the lack of previously considered fundamental aspects of the game, including the strategic use of the bunt to take advantage of defensive alignment and the widespread use of the shift."When they come down, these kids from MIT, Stanford, Harvard, wherever they're from, they've never played baseball in their life," he told Eskin. "When they come down to talk about stuff like [shifts], should I just bunt it over there? They're like, 'No, don't do that. We don't want you to do that. We want you to hit a homer.'"It's just not baseball to me. We're creating something that's not fun to watch. It's boring. You're turning players into robots. You've taken the human element out of the game."In October,Brian Costa and Jared Diamondof theWall Street Journalreported MLB games last season "saw an average gap of 3 minutes Adam Jones Jersey , 48 seconds between balls in play, an all-time high." In addition, the league set records for pitching changes, time between pitches and longest games.TheWSJcited teams' use of data to seek pitchers who generate more strikeouts and hitters who generate fly balls to avoid shifts and create more home runs as key reasons for the lack of activity. It noted the "all-or-nothing approach means that between each home run there is a lot of standing around and waiting."Werth, who was one of the National League's toughest outs in his prime with the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals, struggled to adapt to the changing game over his final three seasons. He posted a .226/.322/.393 triple-slash line across 70 games for the Nats last year. His .360 career on-base percentage would rank inside the top 30 of active players if he was on a current roster. He toldJon Heymanof Fancred Sports he was "done" in June after a brief stint in the Seattle Mariners organization, though.

He was 75.The team says he died Wednesday night in San Diego surrounded by family. No cause was given.Welke worked in baseball for more than 50 years. He joined the Padres in 2014 Travis Wood Jersey , following general manager A.J. Preller from the Texas Rangers to San Diego. Welke also worked the Phillies, Dodgers, Orioles, Blue Jays, Royals and Reds.Welke was instrumental in the Rangers reaching consecutive World Series. He was directly involved in the signings and acquisitions of Adrian Beltre, Jurickson Profar and Elvis Andrus. He also helped sign Dave Stieb, Pat Hentgen and John Olerud. In a statement, Preller calls Welke a “visionary who knew and loved baseball, and he shared that knowledge and passion with me and countless other scouts throughout his five decades in the game.” Harry How/Getty ImagesChris Sale will return to chase another World Series ring with the Boston Red Sox in 2019, as the team picked up his $15 million contract option Tuesday. The next step should involve offering him roughly 10 times that amount to stay for the long haul. For now, the Red Sox are in no rush. They spent Wednesday celebrating their World Series victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers with a parade through Boston. According to Christopher Smith of MassLive.com, team owner John Henry had no updates on contract talks with Sale or anyone else:Christopher Smith SmittyOnMLBJohn Henry on a potential Chris Sale extension:quot; We havent had any conversations about any contracts thus far http://www.tigersfanproshop.com/authentic-joe-jimenez-jersey ,quot; Henry said. quot;I havent Dave. Weve been focused like the players on one thing.quot;Even once their celebratory mood fades, the Red Sox still won't be in any hurry to extend Sale. He isn't slated for free agency untilnextwinter. If anything, now is arguablynot the time to lock up the left-hander.Though 2018 was a banner year for the seven-time All-Star in some respects鈥攈e set new career marks with a 2.11 ERA and 13.5 strikeouts per nine innings鈥攊t was his most challenging year in others. Most notably, he went on the disabled list twice with left shoulder inflammation in the second half of the season. The 29-year-old wasn't the same after his second DL stint. His average fastball velocityand overall effectiveness dropped in September and October. A stomach ailmentalsoforced a brief hospital stay that cost him a start in the American League Championship Series. If Sale was a free agent right now under normal circumstances, his market value would be somewhere in the Max Scherzer/David Price neighborhood: seven years at $30 million a pop.Under these abnormal circumstances, however, his market value would almost certainly be approached with more caution. Maybe less Scherzer/Price and more Jon Lester: six years at $25 million a pop. When Sale and the Red Sox sit down to talk, it should be straightforward.Sale might accept a big payday now, or he may risk further injury for a bigger payday later. For the Red Sox, it would mean risking the big payday now and hoping to be rewarded with a pitcher worthy of an even bigger payday. As far as Boston should be concerned, there's one reassuring thing about Sale's shoulder: It's still intact. There's no way Sale would have been pitching at all in September or October if there was structural damage in his shoulder. Rust plausibly may be to blame for his issues. The four starts he made in September were basically a rehab assignment, and he struggled with his mechanics in one of them.Sale's fastball sat at 93.3 mph in the playoffs Jose Iglesias Jersey , compared to 94.8 mph in the regular season. But he was able to reach back for 96-97 mph as needed, and he also threw some filthy sliders. He was especially nasty when he struck out the side to close out Game 5 of the World Series:It shouldn't be taken for granted that Sale's inevitable decline began with his shoulder woes.He could bounce right back in 2019, and more careful management of his workload could result in more of the same into 2020 and beyond. If that happens, the Red Sox would get $30 million value out of a pitcher they extended for $25 million. If not, the Red Sox would still have an insurance policy of sorts: Sale has proved he can pitch well without elite velocity. As part of a deliberate experiment, Sale dropped his average fastball from 95.1 mph to 93.7 mph in his final season with the Chicago White Sox in 2016. He put up a 3.34 ERA over 226.2 innings anyway, and he didn't need to boost his velocity to finish strong in the K/9 department. This speaks to what Sale has to lean on even if he's not throwing in the mid- or upper 90s. He can throw strikes with precision, and his four-pitch mix (four-seamer, sinker, slider, changeup) allows him to show hitters different angles and speeds.Considering all of this, the only real danger of giving Sale a big-money extension would be a complete breakdown of his health. The potential reward should weigh at least as heavily for the Red Sox.There's still the question of whether Sale is willing to sign a new deal now. He may prefer to bet on himself to have a huge walk year in 2019.Or not. Sale has always sung his own kind of tune Denny McLain Jersey , up to and especially including when he was asked about his contract status on WEEI in February:"I don't worry about that crap, honestly. I have one thing to do, right? Play baseball. Pitch. Be a good teammate. Those are all kind of all wrapped into one thing as what I am as a pitcher. I am not an agent. I am not an owner. I am not a general manager, so I know basically nothing about contracts. If and when that happens, all of them can take care of that. I am worried about baseball."You'd think a guy who's been dramatically underpaid by his current contract (a five-year, $32.5 million deal signed in 2013) would be champing at the bit for more money. But Sale is Sale. He clearly prefers to keep his focus between the lines. The only thing he and his representatives might insist on is an early opt-out, not unlike the one that Price declined to exercise Wednesday. Such things are standard nowadays, and the Red Sox can view it as a possible way out of Sale's true decline years. All things considered, it's a logical time to make a deal. Sale and the Red Sox need only to come together to hammer it out. Stats courtesy of Baseball Reference, FanGraphs and Baseball Savant.

The Boston Red Sox Aaron Nola Jersey ,  for Kansas City Royals third basemanMike Moustakas, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com.Per that report, "there's enough of a market for Moose that it's more likely than not the Royals deal him this month."Manny Machado's status looms over any trade talks around baseball, however.According toMark Feinsandof MLB.com Juan Samuel Jersey , the Royals likely "will have to wait until Machado gets dealt first. Manny could be the domino that starts a number of things in motion."Machado is the bigger fish and the better player, but Moustakas would still be a nice consolation prize for teams unwilling to meet the BaltimoreOrioles' asking price. The 29-year-old is hitting .249 with 19 homers and 58 RBI this season, and the shortstop would provide solid pop for a team looking to add an upgrade at the hot corner, his position last season. The Red Sox and Yankees are currentlyjostling for first place in the AL East http://www.philliesfanproshop.com/authentic-pat-neshek-jersey , with Boston holding a 4.5-game lead over New York. Neither team particularly needs the upgrade necessarily from an offensive standpoint鈥攖he Red Sox lead baseball in runs (530), while the Yankees are third (498)鈥攂ut adding another dangerous bat could set either team apart from the other.Atlanta, meanwhile, is trying to catch the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East Robin Roberts Jersey , trailing them by just 0.5 games. The Braves are eighth in runs scored (456) but tied for 18th in homers (101). Adding a power bat like Moustakas would certainly make sense for Atlanta. Jayne Kamin-Oncea/Getty ImagesA Los Angeles Dodgers fan died after being struck by a foul ball during a game at Dodger Stadium in August.According to Outside the Lines' William Weinbaum, the Los Angeles County coroner determined Linda Goldbloom died after suffering an "acute intracranial hemorrhage due to history of blunt force trauma," which happened during the Dodgers' 5-4 12-inning win over the San Diego Padres.Goldbloom was hit in the ninth inning when a foul ball from a Padres batter sailed above the protective netting behind home plate on the first-base side.Goldbloom's daughter, Jana Brody Tug McGraw Jersey , told Weinbaum that medical personnel transported her to the L.A. County-USC Medical Center, where she underwent emergency brain surgery. Goldbloom died Aug. 29 after her family took her off her ventilator. The Dodgers provided a statement about Goldbloom's death to Weinbaum: "Mr. and Mrs. Goldbloom were great Dodgers fans who regularly attended games. We were deeply saddened by this tragic accident and the passing of Mrs. Goldbloom. The matter has been resolved between the Dodgers and the Goldbloom family. We cannot comment further on this matter."MLB in 2015 released the results of a study that recommended teams increase the area covered by protective netting or barrier to that within 70 feet of home plate. The league announced last February that all 30 stadiums would have netting that extended to the far end of each team's dugout. That came after a young fan was hospitalized in 2017 after she was hit by a foul ball at Yankee Stadium.Brody advocated for further protective netting going forward."I'd love to see the netting extended vertically, and we know it doesn't block the view," she said. "Raise it a little higher鈥攚hat's the hurt in that?"Editor's note: An earlier version of this article reported the name of the Padres batter thought to have been at bat at the time of the injury Drew Hutchison Jersey , but enough doubt has been cast on that identity that it has now been removed from the story.
